After a delay in competition due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Cairn University Athletic Department is pleased to announce the return of women's basketball for a shortened, independent 2021 season!
The Highlanders women's basketball program anticipates a strong 2021 season with an experienced returning core, and three talented newcomers: Amanda Berry, Korin Bradley, and Mackenzie Judd, all who look to make an impact.
The Highlanders will play an eight game schedule in tandem with the men's basketball team. Both teams will alternate between home and away games over the course of the month of February. Junior Guard Dakota Hitchner had this to say about the expectations for this year's team:
"The expectations I have for the team would be first, to give 110% in every practice and every game; I think it can be hard to do this knowing that this is a shortened season. However, for our senior, Melissa Good, it is her last season. Secondly, I expect our team to be a light to all the colleges we will be traveling to. I expect our team not to allow our competing nature to outweigh our light of Christ because He is the reason for playing."
The Highlanders will open their season on the road at the University of Valley Forge on Friday, February 5th, before welcoming the Patriots to the Mason Activity Center on Saturday, February 6th. The Highlanders look to restart a win streak against the Patriots after dropping their early season matchup 51-81 in 2019. With two wins this season, Cairn has the chance to retake the lead in the all-time matchup against UVF, which currently stands at 6-7.
Next, the Lady Highlanders will join the men's team in traveling to Pottersville, New York to take on the Huskies of Word of Life Bible Institute in a two game series. Game one will tip off at 5:00 PM on Monday, February 15th, followed by game two on Tuesday, February 16th.
On Friday, February 19th, Cairn will travel to Lancaster, Pennsylvania to face the Chargers of Lancaster Bible College for the first time since 2012. The second matchup of the home-and-home series will take place the next day in Langhorne on Saturday, February 20th, with tipoff at 7 PM. The last time Cairn women's basketball faced LBC was as the Crimson Eagles of Philadelphia Biblical University (PBU). The Crimson Eagles lost that matchup 62-55, so the Highlanders will attempt to secure a win for the first time against the Chargers in almost a decade.
To round off the shortened season, the Highlanders will travel to Clarks Summit for the front end of a home and home matchup. Game one will take place at Clarks Summit on Friday, February 26th, and game two will tip off Saturday, February 27th at 7 PM in Langhorne. Last season, the Defenders swept the Highlanders in conference play. Cairn will look to start a new winning streak this season and even up the all-time record, which Clarks Summit currently owns at 7 wins to the Highlanders' 5.
To begin the season in accordance with local guidelines, the Cairn University athletic department will not host any fans in the Mason Activity Center in 2021 due to risks associated with COVID-19. However, we look forward to hosting Highlander fans again in the near future.
