Zamroz and Women's Basketball Win Big Over CSAC Rival

Langhorne, PA - Things finally clicked for Cairn University's women's basketball team on Wednesday night as first year coach Walt Zamroz and the women's team won in a big way.

Box Score

Junior guard Haley Weber started the game off on the right foot, as the long-range shooter knocked down a tri-fector to start the scoring 50 seconds in. Senior forward Hannah McCardle then scored Cairn's next 7 points as the Highlanders cruised out to a 10-4 lead. The visiting Gators of Notre Dame University of Maryland stormed back to 10-8. A three-point play from McCardle started another run for the Highlanders, this time an even bigger 23-1 run over the next four and a half minutes, opening up the teams largest lead of the season at that point of 14 points, 23-9.

With just under a minute to play in the half, Haley Weber knocked down her second of three 3-pointers on the night, giving Cairn the 32-14 lead going into the lockerroom, and another largest lead of the season, 18 points.

Coming out of the break, the Gators drained back-to-back baskets in an attempt to make a game of it, but the Highlanders responded with a 13-0 run, building an unassailable lead, 51-18.

As time ticked away on the clock, the Cairn ladies slowly stretched their lead, eventually culminating into a 45 point margin. A Notre Dame jumper just before time expired cut the margin to 43 points, but the Highlanders hardly noticed as they celebrated their first win of the season, 77-34.

The win is the first for several of the players on the team and for 1st year coach Walt Zamroz.

Several different Highlanders put up career numbers on the night. With a monster night, Hannah McCardle put up career-best in points (30), rebounds (16), and assists (6) to lead the onslaught. Junior forward Ruth Nelson nearly doubled her previous best offensive output by draining 11 of 22 field goals on her way to 25 points. Nelson also came up 12 rebounds to complete her second career double-double. Freshman point guard Amie Eppolito was shutout for only the third time in her young career, but she could be forgiven when considering she was busy  assisting on 8 buckets to set her career-benchmark. Haley Weber finished with 11 points and 6 rebounds. Still working her way back to full fitness after battling as a shoulder injury, Morgan Swan recorded her first 4 points of her career, shooting a perfect 2-for-2. Regina Younger tied her career-best with 4 rebounds in her ever-present defensive displays. Emily Tambussi finished with 7 rebounds and tallied 3 points, improving her season averages. Capping things off was Erin Greenwood who, as usual, did a lot of the dirty work and finished with 4 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal for an all-around performance.

Zamroz was all smiles for most of the game as he struggled to contain his excitement for the girls who have worked non-stop this season.

The win moves Cairn to 1-18 and 1-11 in conference. It also moves them into a three-way tie for 10th place in the conference with Notre Dame (MD) and Cedar Crest.
