Allentown, Pa. - A second half surge from Cairn University's women's basketball ran out of time on wednesday night agaisnt Cedar Crest College.

Following some early season struggles, the Highlanders showed more than just signs of life in their 60-53 defeat to Cedar Crest College. Cairn trailed the Falcons 32-21 at halftime of their Colonial States Athletic Conference showdown in Allentown, Pa and despite coming out on the wrong end of the final score, 60-53, the Highlanders were the better team in the final 20 minutes.
Cairn shot an impressive 13-for-26 in the second half, nailing half of the thier shots, inlcuding going 2-for-2 in their 3-pt attempts. The ladies also made 4-of-5 free-throws in the second stanza. This impressive display of accuracy helped the Highlanders claim a moral victory in winning the second half 32-28, and no doubt boosting the young teams confidence.
Emphasis on Cairn's second half display is not to say that Cairn played a poor first half. The ladies shot around their season average in the opening period. Unfortunately, the Highlanders were up against a hot-shooting Cedar Crest team that showed it could be deadly from the floor as well. The Falcons made 9-of-13 3-pt attempts, 69%, throughout the game and a perfect 5-for-5 in the second half.
An area of vast improvement from Cairn came on the boards. The Highlanders outrebounded their opponents 42-31, the benefactor of a huge night for
Ruth Nelson who had 15 rebounds.
Hannah McCardle and
Erin Greenwood each grabbed 8 rebounds as well.
Ruth Nelson add 14 points to her 15 rebounds to complete a double-double, while Hannh McCardle also logged 14 points. Haley
Haley Weber bounced out of her recent slump to grab 13 points, including a hat-trick of 3-pointers.
Cedar Crest's Kayleigh Keggan led all scorers with 17 points.
The Highlanders slip to 0-6, 0-3 on the season and are still searching for the first win of the season. The ladies now have off until December 29th when they will host out of state Eastern Mennonite University.
