GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA – Going into contest with Gywnedd-Mercy College, the women’s basketball team knew they probably would have their hands full.
Entering Monday’s contest, the Griffins – largely regarded as the top team in the league – were riding a four game win streak in which they cruising through their opponents with an average margin of victory that equated nearly 20 points.
Make that five straight.
Gywnedd-Mercy had 14 of 15 players reach the scoring column in a contest that saw the host squad connect on 18 of 28 shots in the second half while managing a 52.2 percent shooting clip for the game. A much taller and lankier Griffin squad (they boast six players on their roster listed as 5’10 or taller) dominated on the glass, snatching 17 offensive rebounds during the 40 minutes of play while holding a 43-26 edge in total rebounds for the game.
Incredibly, all but one player for the Giffins also managed at least one assist and all but two players grabbed at least one board in what can be coined as an extremely efficient and well-balanced night for the host group.
More than anything, however, the most telling statistic from Monday evening was the discrepancy with points in the paint as Gywnedd held a 52-8 advantage regarding points around the basket. As if that stat alone isn’t enough, the Griffins also managed significant edges in points off turnovers (27-5) and second chance points (17-3).
For PBU, Dani Norton had a proficient offensive outing, dropping in 21 points to mark the fourth time this season the junior guard has eclipsed the 20-point barrier. Monday was also significant for Norton as the native of Elizabethown, PA dropped in her 1,000th career point making her the 12th women’s basketball player to achieve the coveted milestone. Senior guard Summer Mulled chipped in with 16 points on four of six shooting from long-range while adding three assists to the mix.
PBU falls to 3-6 (1-3 CSAC) with the loss while Gywnedd-Mercy improves to 10-4 (4-0 CSAC).
The Crimson Eagles will host their only other contest of the week on Wednesday, taking on Southeastern University (10-4) in non-conference action at 6:00 pm in the Mason Activity Center.
