LANGHORNE, PA - When in need, the answer is simple. Give the rock to your veteran playmaker.
Dani Norton, who came into Tuesday's contest with Cedar Crest College averaging almost 25 points per game, put the Crimson Eagles on her back in the waning moments to help lead PBU to their first ever win within a Colonial States Athletic Conference contest.
The junior guard hit back-to-back buckets – the latter with 6.8 ticks left on the clock – to singlehandedly lift the Crimson Eagles to a W on opening night in conference play.
Facing a team that triumphed in just a single conference outing and was cemented at the bottom of the CSAC cellar a year ago, the Crimson Eagles found out early what a difference a year can make.
Averaging just under 59 points per outing last season, Cedar Crest entered Tuesday’s match-up with PBU putting up over 76 points per contest through their first three games.
Looking to strike early Tuesday night, the Falcons’ well-oiled offense helped the visiting squad jump out to an early 11-4 lead. A quick timeout from Crimson Eagle head coach Drew Watson proved effective as the host group would rattle off nine unanswered points to go up 13-11 with just over 12 minutes remaining in the opening stanza.
The remainder of the period would see both teams see-saw back and forth as neither group could create any type of separation. A combined eleven ties and lead changes later, the game would remain log-jammed at 30-all during the break.
PBU would see their biggest advantage of the contest swell to six at 57-51 with nine minutes remaining in the second half, but a consistent Cedar Crest attack would spur the visiting squad on a 16-3 run to put the Falcons up eight with 4:38 to play.
With the game on the line, PBU’s defensive tenacity was challenged when their sideline leader called a timeout.
Once again, it worked.
The Crimson Eagles allowed just two points over the final four and a half minutes of play, helping the group claw their way back into the contest during the closing ticks. A jumper by junior point guard Sarah Oessenich brought the team within three with 1:20 left, ultimately setting the stage for Norton’s heroics.
A high pressure defensive front helped force a costly Cedar Crest turnover, cueing a behind-the-back step back triple from Norton with 40 seconds to play to deadlock things at 69-all.
Norton snatched the loose rebound off a missed jumper from the Falcons with 15 ticks left and went coast-to-coast, putting up an eight foot baseline jumper from the left wing with just 6.8 seconds remaining.
As one might expect, it went in.
With one last gasp in the final seconds Cedar Crest failed to even register a shot, as PBU’s high-octane pressure in the back court disrupted the Falcons’ final attack.
The win improves the Crimson Eagles to 2-2 on the year while the Falcons slip to 2-2.
Perhaps most impressive on the night was PBU’s ability to shutdown “do-it-all” freshman forward Liz Sunderhaus. The rookie phenom came into the contest averaging team highs in points (18.3), rebounds (11.7), and field goal percentage (64.3), but was limited to six points and eight boards on just two of six shooting for the night.
For PBU, Norton once again led all scorers with a game high 28 points off of six for 10 shooting from long range. Summer Mullen added a season high 14 points to go with four assists and three steals, and junior Lindsey Fornwalt chipped in with 11 points and eight rebounds on five of six shooting. Senior Amy Dodridge went for a career high 10 points on five of nine shooting for the game.
The Crimson Eagles will play in their second consecutive CSAC contest next Tuesday when the group hosts Cabrini College. Game time is set for 6:00 pm.
