Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FREDERICK, MD – Cairn Baseball took two games from Hood College on the road Saturday afternoon, winning 16-3 in game one and 14-10 in game two.
 
GAME ONE
Cairn (2-1 / UNITED EAST) got the scoring started in the first innings with senior outfielder Will Wikner (Gaithersburg, MD / Shenandoah University) worked a one-out walk as classmate Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) recorded his first hit on the young season, sending a two-run blast over the right field fence.
 
As the lineup turned back over in the third, freshman outfielder Josh Smeltzer, Jr. (Reading, PA / Muhlenberg HS) led off with a single as did sophomore shortstop Nathan Schurga (Wilmington, DE / Conrad Schools of Science) and Wikner was hit by a pitch, bringing up Warr with the bases loaded. He would single to centerfield, driving in Smeltzer and Schurga. Senior outfielder Dylan Jackson (Levittown, PA / Chestnut Hill College) doubled to right, scoring Wikner and putting the Highlanders ahead 4-0.
 
Hood (1-8 / MAC COMMONWEALTH) got on the scoreboard in the fourth, scoring a pair on a home run. The Highlanders answered right back in the fifth with Warr, junior catcher Zach Bauers (Cooper City, FL / Cooper City), and Jackson hitting three-straight singles, Jackson scoring Warr. Junior third baseman Ben Gagnon (Bethlehem, PA / Northampton CC) singled and freshman infielder Gustavo Villegas (Plantation, FL / Plantation) put the ball in play, scoring Bauers on an error. Smeltzer then singled, scoring Gagnon and Jackson to reassert the Cairn lead, 8-2.
 
Senior designated hitter Tyler Harris (Oxford, PA / Oxford Area) continued the scoring in the sixth with a double, driving in Warr and Bauers who each singles earlier. Gagnon followed with a double right after a Hood pitching change and was driven in along with Harris on a single by Villegas. Wikner tripled, scoring Villegas and turned over the lineup for Warr to then single and Bauers double. Jackson walked and Harris came back up, working an RBI walk with the bases loaded and scoring Cairn's 16th run of the game. The Blazers scored on an RBI double in the bottom half as Cairn would hold them to three runs for the game.
 
Senior lefthander Brett Bottinger (Plymouth Meeting, PA / Plymouth-Whitemarsh) got the game one start, going an even five innings with two runs and six strikeouts, scattering four hits and getting the win. Sophomore reliever Jack Wright (Telford, PA / Souderton) shut the door with a pair of strikeouts in as many innings.
 
In game one, Warr went 5-5 with four RBI. Bauers and Smeltzer each had three hits.
 
GAME TWO
Another high scoring affair ensued in game two as Wikner homered in the first inning, scoring Schurga. Bauers got on base with a walk, scoring as Harris singled to left. As Gagnon singled, the Highlanders would run the double-steal and score Harris to have a 4-0 lead in the first.
 
Wikner walked with two outs in the second, bringing up Warr who homered, putting the Highlanders up 6-0. The offensive showing continued in the third as Harris and Gagnon walked followed by Villegas singling to score Harris. Schurga dropped a 2 RBI single to right as Wikner doubled on the next at bat for an RBI and Schurga came around to score on a wild pitch. Warr came back up for the second time in the inning, doubling and scoring Wikner to double the deficit, 12-0. Jackson singled to score Warr, ending the inning ahead 13-0.
 
Senior right-hander Ronaldinho Alcin (Miami, FL / North Miami Beach) kept Hood scoreless for five innings, striking out six and would be in line for the win.
 
Hood crafted a late response, putting up five runs in both the sixth and seventh innings to cut the lead to four as Cairn scored in the seventh before senior reliever Carlos Valenzuela (Langhorne, PA / Kentucky County Day) slammed the door at the end of the seventh to give the Highlanders a sweep on the day.
 
Warr led the way again in the second game, hitting 3-4 with a double and home run while Wikner had two hits in the form of a double and home run as well, both with three RBI. Harris also had a pair of hits on the game.
 
With a postponement of their matchup with Desales, Cairn will face Dickinson on the road Wednesday before an eight-game stretch in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
