Women's Basketball: Highlanders Score Second Most in Program History in Defeat of Wells

AURORA, NY – The Cairn University Women's Basketball team headed north on Wednesday night as they took on the Wells College Express, scoring the second most points on program history as they defeated the Express, 94-19.

It was all Cairn (3-1) in this one as the Highlanders took the lead about a 1:30 into the game and never looked back. In the first quarter, Cairn was led by freshman guard T'miya Bryant (Raleigh, NC / South Garner High School) who had six points in the period. The Highlanders finished the quarter on a 23-3 run, giving up the only points to Wells (0-1) on a made three pointer halfway through.

Quarter number two was played to the same beat with freshman guard Kenadi Austin (San Antonio, TX / John Marshall) scoring the first two points on fast break layups. The Express would be held scoreless again for almost five minutes before knocking down a three pointer. Freshman forward Rachael Banks (Sturgis, SD / Sturgis Brown High School) hit a jumper and layup to stretch the lead to thirty points. Wells made three free throws as the game went into the halftime break with the Highlanders up 51-8.

Sophomore guard Milán Bradley (Washington, D.C. / Loyola University New Orleans) went off for 7 points in the third quarter, burying a three pointer and pair of layups. The Highlanders entered the final quarter with a 71-13 lead. Freshman forward Amalia Vamvakitis (Waterford, MI / Mount Dora Christian Academy) recorded six points in the frame with a pair of free throws, a jump shot, and layup along with freshman guard Kayden Jeselskis (Baltimore, MD / Rosedale Christian Academy) knocked down back-to-back shots from deep, closing the game out by a final score of 94-19 in favor of Cairn.

The Highlander success was fueled by their bench and making the most of the Express' turnovers. Cairn had an even 50 points off of turnovers with 25 second chance points. The bench had 63 of the Highlanders' 94 points. The headline was Cairn's fantastic shooting from the floor, finishing an even 50% from the field on 41-82 shooting, the second most field goals made as a team in program history, and 57% in the second quarter alone.

Bradley led the offense with 12 points off of the bench, shooting 2-4 from deep, adding a pair of assists and three steals. Vamvakitis was next with 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Jeselskis had three triples for 9 points. Junior forward Taylor Hinson (Carney's Point, NJ / Collingswood HS), Austin, and Bryant each had 8, Austin led all players with 5 assists on the night.

The Highlanders prepare to take on the Nittany Lions of Penn State – Berks on Monday for their last tune up before conference play tips off. Monday's game is on the road and set for a 6 p.m. tip in Reading, PA.
