Highlanders Bested by Cyclones in Makeup Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Langhorne, PA- After a tightly contested game and two rainouts earlier this season, Cairn and Centenary met this Saturday to conclude their season series.  The Cyclones bested the Highlanders in both contests as Cairn was defeated 12-8 and 6-0.

Box Score (Game 2- Coming Soon)

In a surprising first contest the Highlanders staked themselves to a substantial early deficit, before fighting all the way back and nearly winning.  Cairn trailed by a score of 11-0 in the third inning due to a series of errors, stolen bases, and solid hitting by the Cyclones.  The Highlanders though, showed great resolve battling almost all of the way back from the very deep hole they were in.  Cairn finally got on the board in the bottom of the fifth when Josh Freed singled and Mike Deluca doubled to set up what would become a big inning.  After a Jacob Allen groundout, it looked like Centenary might escape the rally, but four straight two out singles plated four runs for the Highlanders.  With the game winding down to its end, the Highlanders would stage one more comeback attempt as Caleb Lang and Kenny Searle hit back-to-back doubles, and later Josh Freed singled in two runs, Cairn's final two of the game.  Despite their best efforts Cairn dropped the first game of the doubleheader by a score of 12-8.

The Highlanders had a number of standout hitting performances with the best including:

Caleb Moore (2-4, 2 runs, 1 RBI)
Caleb Lang (2-4, 2 runs, 3 RBI)
Kenny Searle (2-4, 1 run, 2 RBI)
Josh Freed (2-4, 1 run, 1 RBI)

In the Highlanders second game of the afternoon, Cairn was shut down by the pitching master class put on by Centenary's Jimmy Kraivec.  Joey Nieves-Markee and Caleb Lang combined to give up a mere four earned runs in the contest, but in a game where the Highlanders only mustered three hits, any amount of runs proved to be too much.  Lang, Searle, and Eric Hodges each managed a hit, but none of the hits were in succession, preventing the Highlanders from scoring any runs.  Cairn's best chance came in the bottom of the third when they loaded the bases, but they could not stumble onto a pivotal hit that would place them in the scoring column. In the end, Cairn was swept by the Cyclones as they dropped the second game of the doubleheader by the score of 6-0.

The Highlanders will host rival Baptist Bible College Tuesday afternoon as they look to achieve two more wins.  The first game of the doubleheader will begin at 1:00 PM.
