Box Score Langhorne, PA- In a low scoring contest highlighted by two big offensive innings for each team, the Cairn Highlanders were able to hold off Purchase College and break their current losing streak, winning by a score of 3-2.
Box ScoreThe Highlanders and Panthers were evenly matched coming into this contest, as both teams had endured recent losing streaks and were playing with a chip on their shoulder. The first couple innings saw both pitchers on top of their games as both teams were blanked throughout the first three innings. The Panthers scored the games first run in the top of the fourth, but two innings later the Highlanders struck to take the lead. After a Caleb Moore single, Caleb Lang triple, and Kenny Searle single the Highlanders had taken the lead 2-1. Cairn tacked on another run in the seventh when Jacob Allen singled in third basemen Manny Rivera. With Cairn leading 3-1, Purchase began to knock away at Cairn's lead. Scoring a run in the eighth to bring the lead to one run, and placing men on second and third in the top of the ninth, it looked likely that this contest was headed to extra innings. But freshman Josh Freed illustrated his poise on the mound getting two straight ground balls and a pop up to save the game for Cairn.
The Highlanders played error free baseball for the first time in quite some time which is a large part of why Cairn was able to achieve a victory today. Cairn will play a three game series against CSAC opponent Neumann University this weekend, opening at Cairn on Friday and concluding at Neumann with a doubleheader on Saturday.
