Box Score Langhorne, PA- Due to difficulties with the facilities at Gwynedd Mercy University, Cairn hosted the Griffins Friday afternoon for the first of a three game series, in which the Highlanders fell 16-5.
Box Score
The Highlanders played their second game in as many days, and as in their contest against Swarthmore College, the Highlanders again struggled to string together hits. Tallying a mere five hits against CSAC powerhouse Gwynedd Mercy University will never bode well for the opponents chances, and today's story was no different. The Highlanders gave up three runs in the bottom of the first to begin a game that was filled with action. In the next frame, Cairn right fielder
Joey Nieves-Markee again used his speed to score as the sophomore caught the Griffins off guard with a straight steal of home. The Highlanders leaned on their intelligent baserunning in the top of the third, when
Caleb Lang took advantage of a Gwynedd Mercy error and two ground outs, making his way all the way around the bases and scoring Cairn's second run of the contest. The Griffins struck back in the next frame, plating two runs, but Cairn was able to put together their first substantial hit against the Gwynedd Mercy starter, as a
Jacob Allen double led to a big two run inning for the Highlanders. Trailing by one run, 5-4, both teams offenses stagnated for the next few innings. Gwynedd Mercy was able to force three more runs across in both the fifth and sixth innings, manufacturing a comfortable lead, especially considering the Highlanders could only manage three hits in the last five innings of the contest. Despite Cairn's resiliency, the Griffins blew the game open in the eighth inning going on to win by a score of 16-5.
The Highlanders top performers for the afternoon were freshman shortstop
Jacob Allen (2 hits, 2 runs, 1 BB) and sophomore
Caleb Lang (2 hits, 1 run, 1 RBI) as the two combined for four of the Highlanders five hits; with the only other base knock coming from junior
Eric Hodges.
The Highlanders will again host the Griffins on Saturday afternoon to engage in a doubleheader that will conclude this three game series. Play begins at 12:00 PM tomorrow.
