In the Highlanders first contest, Cairn was blitzed from the first pitch by the Griffins high-powered attack. Â Cairn ace Joey Nieves-Markee could not find his groove and the Griffins scored six runs in the top of the first, due in large part to consecutive triples. Â The Highlanders had an excellent chance to fight back in the bottom of the third when a walk, single, and hit by pitch loaded the bases for Cairn with no outs. Â A bang-bang play at the plate quelched the Highlanders momentum and Cairn only tallied one run in the inning. Â The Griffins controlled the rest of the contest, eventually tacking on more runs and winning the first game 13-3. Â
Cairn was again led in the hit column by their two stars up the middle, Caleb Lang and Jacob Allen. Â The tandem both went 2-4 with an RBI in the first contest. Â Additionally, sophomore Trent Fiori went a perfect 2-2 in the afternoon's first game.
Seeking to avoid the sweep, Cairn played the Griffins tight in the early stages of the day's second affair. Â Gwynedd Mercy managed a run in the first, but neither team would score again until the fourth inning. Â A combination of walks and a towering grand slam blew the game wide open as the Griffins built a 7-0 lead. Â The Highlanders were blanked until the games final frame when leadoff man Allen singled and came all the way around to score, at last putting Cairn on the board. Â One out later the game ended, and Cairn had fallen again 8-1.
Cairn will host out-of-conference rival Lancaster Bible College Tuesday afternoon for a midweek doubleheader. Â Last season, the Highlanders were defeated twice in the regular season by the Chargers, but were able to get revenge in the NCCAA tournament in a 16-13 thriller that sent Cairn to the NCCAA World Series. Â These teams have years of history, so expect sparks to fly when they meet again this week.
