Lancaster, PA - In a repeat of the 2012 NCCAA East Region championship, the Cairn Highlanders met up with the Chargers of Lancaster Bible College in the 2013 version. The winner, however, would be different.
The Highlanders took an early lead in the first on a wild play.
Chad Hollinger struck out swinging, but made an attempt at first base after the ball got past LBC's catcher. The Chargers eventually got the Hollinger out at first base, but while the ball was flying around the first-base line, senior
Jeremy McAlack was making his way home all the way from second. 1-0 to Cairn.
In the top of the second,
Luis Colon batted in Kenneth Searle to give the Highlanders a 2-0 lead.
Things took an even bigger jump in favor of Cairn in the third inning when freshman
Caleb Lang rocked a three-run homerun over the fence, pushing Cairn's lead to 5-0.
LBC cut the lead to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run double.
Cairn's response were back-to-back homeruns from Lang and
Austin Arseneau. Lang's second homer of the game was a two-run blast before Arseneau's follow-up. Cairn's advantage was had now reached 8-2.
The Chargers, determined not to go away without a fight, took advantage of a Highlander error and wild pitch on back-to-back plays, kick-starting a five run inning and reducing the deficit to just one run, 8-7.
Any ground made up by the Chargers was quickly restored as Cairn tallied five runs in the top of sixth. The Highlanders batted through their line-up in the process. Caleb Lang registered his 6th RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly, scoring fellow rookie
Caleb Moore. Hollinger and McAlack scored two more runs on Ken Searle's single. With the bases loaded and after some line-up shuffling from the hosts, Colon walked, tallying one more run. Jon Sanville scored from third on a wild pitch, making it 13-7.
Both teams scored one run each before the bottom of the eighth, with Cairn leading 14-8.
Matt Talliercio's three-run homer made it 14-11. Two more scores from LBC made for an interesting finish in the championship bout.
The Highlanders tallied two insurance runs in the top half of the inning before closing the game out 16-13.
This is Cairn's second NCCAA East Region championship ever, both coming in the past three seasons.
Tyson Rohrs's picked up his fourth career win, coming into the game in the fifth inning. He pitched 1.1 innings, allowing only three hits and one run.
Caleb Lang led the charge at the plate for the Highlanders, going 2 for 4, scoring two runs and earning six RBIs.
Jon Sanville also went 2 for 4, tallying one run and run batted in. Luis Colon recorded two RBIs on two hits. Chad Hollinger led Cairn with four runs.
Caleb Meyer and Frank DiFlippo eached tallied three hits, while Meyer led Lancaster Bible with four RBIs.
The Highlanders will now make their way to Mason, OH to compete in the NCCAA National Championships from May 8-11.
