Langhorne, PAJoey Nieves-Markee pitches a no-hitter for Cairn as the Highlanders sweep the Patriots of Valley Forge Christian College, 15-4 and 14-1.

Nieves-Markee’s impressively display comes one day after Cairn University’s Kelly Hendrickson was one hit away from pitching a perfect game for the softball team.

In the day’s first game, the Highlanders and Patriots battled back-and-forth in the early going to a 4-4 score after two innings. It was at that point freshmen Tyson Rohrs’s and Jeremy West combined to shutout Valley Forge for the final five innings. Cairn’s offense carried on at their steady pace, though, tacking on another 11 runs on their way to claiming a 15-4 victory.

Rohrs and West each struck out four batters, with Rohrs earning the win and West the save.
Offensively, Eric Hodges scored four times, walking twice and going 2 for 2. Caleb Lang finished 2 for 3, scoring three times. Jon Sanville also earned two hits in a 2 for 4 performance, tying for the game-high two RBIs and hitting his 2nd double of the season.

Joey Nieves-Markee went the distance in game two, allowing only one run in his first career-win, facing 20 batters and not allowing a single hit.

Valley Forge’s solo run came in the top of the first, after a couple of walked batters and an error allowed Sam Sheesley to cross home-plate.

It was all Cairn after that. The Highlanders took a 7-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth, when they pounded seven more runs in and eventually earning a 14-1 win.

Lang paced the Highlanders in game two, going 3 for 3 at the plate. Elbert Upsey came in late on to go 2 for 2, one of which was a triple in the sixth.

The wins move Cairn to 5-18 on the season.

Keuka College comes to town on Thursday for a single-game with a 3pm start.
