Baseball Goes Down Fighting in CSAC Regular Season Finale

Box Score | Game 1
Box Score | Game 2

Langhorne, PA - In their last scheduled Colonial States Athletic Conference match-up, the Cairn Highlanders went down swinging, nearly grabbing a later winner.

The visiting Mighty Macs needed two wins on Saturday to have an outside chance of earning a playoff spot, and early in game one they showed their intent on making that happen. Immaculata took a 2-0 lead right out of the gates and eventually made it a 5-0 lead midway through the third inning.

The familiar faces were at work for Cairn, though, as the Highlanders edged back into it 5-3. Caleb Lang drove in Jeremy McAlack before Kenneth Searle hit an RBI double shortly thereafter. Searle scored himself on a wild pitch.

It was all Immaculata after that, though. Bryan McHale allowed only four hits all game, with three of those coming in the bottom of the third when Cairn notched its three runs. The Mighty Macs shutout the Highlanders the rest of the way in route to a 13-3 victory.

Immaculata started off strong once again in game two, and for the second straigh game held a 5-0 advantage after two and a half innings. And once again, the Highlanders responded in the bottom of the third,  this time through Austin Arseneau's RBI double, cutting the lead to 5-1.

The bottom of the fifth inning rolled around with the Mighty Macs threatening to run away with proceedings, holding a 7-1 lead. That's when the Highlander comeback started.

Senior McAlack tallied his third triple of the season to get things rolling. Arseneau, yet again, came through in the clutch with an RBI single. He was later picked off at first, but Caleb Lang was busy scoring on the same play, dwindling the visitors lead to 7-3.

The rally continued in the sixth inning, starting off with freshman Caleb Moore's second career double. Chad Hollinger knocked the rookie in two bats later. 7-4. After stealing second, his 7th stolen base of the season, Hollinger was crossing homeplate off a Lang single, 7-5. With momentum on their side and a player known for his clutch performances at the plate, Austin Arseneau drilled a triple, scoring Lang, and cutting the lead to 7-6.

If Immaculata's nerves were rattled, they certainly didn't show it in the top of the seventh. The Mighty Macs put the finishing touches on their season sweep of the Highlanders by scoring six runs on five hits, and putting the hopeful rally beyond the reach of the hosts. Final score, 13-6.

Cairn finishes the 2013 season with a 1-17 conference record, but earn at least one conference win for the second straight season. Progress after three seasons in a row without a conference win from 2008-10.

Their seasons not over yet, though. The Highlanders will play hosts to John Jay College on Wednesday, May 1st in a non-conference showdown before Cairn battles Lancaster Bible College for the right to represent the East Region in the NCCAA World Series in Cleveland, OH. That game will take place in Lancaster, PA on May 4th.
