Langhorne, PA - After falling behind early on, Cairn University's baseball team avoided a semi-final upset against Valley Forge Christian College, earning its spot in the NCCAA East Region Championship with a 7-5 win.
The Patriots made the most of their two hits in the top of the first to take a 2-0. Cairn notched one run in the bottom of the second, but things went from bad to worse in the third when the Highlanders found themseles trailing by four, 5-1, mid way through the third inning.
That's about the time the Highlanders started to find some consistency at the plate and their defense picked it up a notch, scoring six unanswered runs and shutting down Valley Forge the rest of the way.
Michael DeLuca started on the mound for Cairn, pitching three innings, but it was
Tyson Rohrs who was credited with the win after lasting four innings, allowing only three hits and zero runs.
Dean Diernbach and
Caleb Lang combined to close out the game, with Lang earning his first career save.
Caleb Moore had a solid performance at the plate going 2 for 3 with an RBI. Caleb Lang batted .500, 2 for 4, scoring twice.
Austin Arseneau also scored twice and earning an RBI with his one hit with three at-bats.
The win places Cairn into the NCCAA East Region Championship game against Lancaster Bible College in Lancaster, PA on May 4. Before then, Cairn will travel to Immaculata University this Friday for a solo nine-inning game, followed by a doubleheader with the Mighty Macs this Saturday in Langhorne, PA.
The Highlanders are 7-27 this season, having already surpassed their win total of six in 2012.
