Cairn Battles Marywood in 3-game Series over Weekend

Langhorne, PA – The Cairn Highlanders took one of three games against Colonial States Athletic Conference rivals Marywood University over the weekend, winning their first Colonial States Athletic Conference game since a 5-4 win over Centenary College on March 31, 2012.

On Friday, the Pacers came from behind in the fifth inning to overtake the Highlanders in an 11-7 effort in Langhorne, PA.

Cairn took an early lead in the bottom of the first with Austin Arseneau driving in Chad Hollinger with a double.

In the third, both the Pacers and Highlanders notched one run each, Cairn holding to a slim 2-1 lead. That score held until the fifth inning, when the visitors rallied with four runs to take a 5-2 lead over Cairn. Cairn would pull back to within one run by scoring two of their own in the bottom of the inning, with Marywood holding a 5-4 lead.

The Pacers would edge away with a combined five runs in the sixth and seventh innings, jumping to a 10-4 advantage. The Highlanders would attempt a comeback with three runs late on, but  eventually fell 11-7.

Cairn’s Chad Hollinger went an incredible 5 for 5, scoring three runs. Caleb Lang earned three RBI’s and one run on 3 of 5 batting.

On Saturday the teams traveled to Scranton for a doubleheader with the Highlanders responding with their first conference win of the season and only second in their history in the CSAC, claiming a 5-4 win over Marywood.

Cairn once again took an early lead, 2-0, in top of the first before the host Pacers responded with four runs of their own, surging to a 4-2 lead. The Highlanders added a single run to their total in the top of the second, but Marywood still clung to a 4-3 lead.

The teams remained scoreless over the next three innings before the visiting Highlanders used a couple of sacrifice bunts in the top of the sixth inning to propel themselves into a 5 -4 lead.

Behind Michael DeLuca’s pitching and some strong defense, Cairn shutout the Pacers over the course of the last two innings and preserving their first conference win of the season and second-ever since joining the Colonial States Athletic Conference in 2008.

DeLuca lasted the full seven innings, striking out three batters, and allowing only six hits.

The Highlanders used hits from seven different players.

In the third game of the series, both teams started things off with a pair of runs leading to a 2-2 score after one inning. In the bottom of the third, the Pacers  scored another pair to take a 4-2 lead.

The Highlanders were trailing 5-2 after Marywood tacked on another security run in the bottom of the fifth.
In the top of the seventh, Cairn threatened to comeback with runners on the corner and no outs. Despite eventually having runners at second and third, the Highlanders were unable to cut the deficit, falling to Marywood 5-2.

Chad Hollinger paced the Highlanders at the plate, going 2 for 4 with one run. Jon Sanville started on the mound, going 5.1 innings, striking out one batter, and giving up five earned runs.

Cairn went 1-2 against Marywood this weekend, moving to 6-26, 1-13 in conference play.

This Tuesday, the Highlanders will play a one-off make-up game with Keystone College.
