Langhorne, PA - Cairn University's baseball team went up against perennial Colonial States Athletic Conference powerhouse and national contender #12 Keystone College on Satuday.
Over the course of 14 innings (a doubleheader consisting of two 7 inning games), the Giants pitching limited the Highlanders to 6 hits all day, severely restricting the hosts ability to tally runs.
In the opener, Keystone's Mike Pembleton went the distance pitching a 2-hit shutout of the Highlanders, striking out 7. Cairn's
Dean Diernbach faced 27 batters, earning 4 strikeouts and allowing only 4 earned runs, an impressive feat considering the strength of the Giatns batting lineup.
Jon Sanville came in for Diernbach late early in the 6th, and held Keystone hit-less for the final 1.2 innings.
Keystone took the first game 6-0, with 7 hits.
Caleb Lang and
Austin Arseneau each went 1-for-3 for Cairn.
The second game saw the Giants make almost all of their hits count as they scored 10 runs on 11 hits.
Anthony Muccio and Miguel Castano each knocked in 3 runs, pacing the way for Keystone.
Arseneau and Lang, again, went 1-for-3 for the Highlanders, but were joined this time by Sanville and
Kenneth Searle who also recorded hits. Lang has recorded a hit in each of the first four games.
Joey Nieves-Markee got his 2nd start of his young career, going 3 innings, striking out 3, and allowing only 4 hits.
Tyson Rohrs and
Michael DeLuca came in for relief. DeLuca only gave up 1 hit in 2 innings of action.
Keystone recorded their second shutout of the Highlanders with a 10-0 score, but Cairn has shown vast improvements since allowing an average of 16.7 runs a game against Keystone last year, including a 26-4 scoreline.
The losses knock the Highlanders to 0-4 overall, 0-2 in CSAC play.
Washngton College comes to town on Tuesday in a non-conference showdown. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:30.
