Winter Haven, FL - Cairn University rallied to take a late lead in a back-and-forth game with Medaille College, only for the Mavericks to mount a rally of their own.
Cairn scored a run off of a wild pinch in the top of the 1st to take a 1-0 lead. Medaille scored 4 runs in the 1st and 2nd innings to take a 4-1 lead.
A 2-run triple from
Kenneth Searle triggered a 3-run top of the 3rd inning for the Highlanders, tying the game at 4-4.
After Medaille regained a 1 run lead in the bottom of the 3rd,
Mitch Peiffer would help Cairn knot things up at 5-5 in the top of the 5th. Once again, the Mavericks responded with 2 runs to charge back in front, 7-5.
Cairn found itself trailing 8-5 heading into the top of the 8th and chances running out when back-to-back doubles from freshman duo
Caleb Lang and
Searle kick-started a 4-run rally that saw the Highlanders take a 9-8 lead. Unfortunately for the Highlanders, Medaille was able to pull another comeback, scoring 6 runs in the bottom of the 8th, and would hold on to a 14-9 win.
Cairn's
Jeremy McAlack had a solid performance at the plate, going 4-for-5. Both
Searle and
Lang went 3-for-5, with Searle knocking in 3 runs.
Eric Hodges earned 2 RBI's with a solo hit.
Cairn returns to action on Sunday against Grace College.
