Baseball Rallies Past Blue Jays

Langhorne, PA - Philadelphia Biblical University exploded offensively late in the game to surge past Polytechnic University to secure a 9-7 victory.

Box Score

Dean Diernbach (Fountainville, PA / Central Bucks West)
pitched a near complete game, earning his first win of the season giving up only 3 earned runs. Freshman Justin Nolan (Philadelphia, PA / International Christian) came in relief in the bottom of the 9th to earn his and the teams first save of the season.

Trailing 6-3 going into the bottom of the 5th inning, Austin Arseneau (Maple Grove, MN / Homeschool) started the inning off with a triple for the Crimson Eagles and was eventually knocked in for the score off of an error by the Blue Jays, but that would the only damage done that inning.

Two more scoreless innings and the Crimson Eagles were still down 6-4 going into the 8th. The Crimson Eagles made quick work of the Blue Jays for a third consecutive shutout inning but they still needed to get some offensive output from their bats.

PBU's Mark Wasson (Willow Grove, Pa / Homeschool) got things off by reaching base on an error. Mike DeLuca (Newburgh, NY / Marlboro) also reached on a Polytechnic error before Shawn Moraca (Kerhonkson, NY, Wawarsing Christian) singled, moving DeLuca to 2nd, but Wasson was thrown out at 3rd. The bases were loaded when DeLuca and Moraca advanced to 3rd and 2nd on a passed ball. That set the stage for the start of the scoring. The third error of the inning on the Blue Jays saw Jeremy McAlack (Newtown, PA / Council Rock North) reach first, sending DeLuca home and Moraca to 3rd. Chad Hollinger (Leoloa, PA / Conestoga Valley) drove in Moraca to even the score 6-6 and advanced McAlack to 3rd. PBU would take the lead when Austin Arseneau hit a sacrifice fly to send in McAlack and giving the Crimson Eagles a 7-6 lead.

Not finished, PBU began giving themselves a cushion going into the 9th inning. Mike Sundholm (Brooklyn, NY / Fort Hamilton) singled, sending Hollinger home. Jon Sanville (Duncannon, PA / Susquenita) reached base on the 4th Blue Jay error as Polytechnic searched for a way to end the inning. Nick Schnittjer (Perkasie, PA / Pennridge) then stepped up and knocked yet another run. When the dust settled on the inning, PBU had scored 5 runs and held a 9-6 lead.

Justin Nolan came to the mound in an attempt to preserve the victory. Nolan faced 5 batters, striking out one, and giving up only 1 run and earning the save, 9-7 to PBU.

Arseneau led the way at the plate for the Crimson Eagles, going 3-for-4, scoring 2 runs and knocking in 2 others. Hollinger went a solid 3-for-5, while Shawn Moraca went 2-for-5. Both Jon Sanville and Nick Schnittjer went 2-for-5, with the latter driving in 3 RBI's.

PBU will square off against CSAC foe Immaculata this Monday. The games start at 12pm in Immaculata, PA.
