On Friday, Philadelphia Biblical University and Neumann played game one of the series at Campbell's Field, home of the AA Camden Riversharks, in Camden, NJ.
In the opening game, PBU's
Jon Sanville (Duncannon, PA / Susquenita) batted a solid 3-for-4 and earned one RBI, knocking in PBU's only score of the game. The 6'3 sophomore was the lone bright spot for the Crimson Eagles on the day as Neumann would go on to take the game 18-1.
The next day, Neumann traveled to Langhorne, PA for a doubleheader to close out the regular season for the Crimson Eagles. In the first game on Saturday, the Crimson Eagles still struggled for hits. The difference between this game and the previous game was PBU got hits from 4 different players. Sanville was once again in on the action, going 1-for-2, but this time the Crimson Eagles also got hits from shortstop
Austin Arseneau (Maple Grove, MN / Homeschool), Michael DeLuca (Newburgh, NY / Marlboro), and taking top honors for PBU was freshman second-baseman
Eric Hodges (Newport News, VA / Denbigh Baptist) who went-2-for-2.
Sanville and
Ian Zang (Alburtus, PA / Emmaus) were on the mound for the Crimson Eagles and only gave up 6 earned runs against the CSAC's 2nd place team. Sanville got the start and gave up 6 hits and 2 earned runs in 4 innings of work. Zang came in relief, pitching 3 innings and conceded 4 earned runs on 5 hits.
Despite the final score line, 11-0, the game was closer than it would lead you to believe. Four runs by the Knights in the top of the 7th inning pushed the 7-0 score into double-digits.
The final game of the series and season, for the Crimson Eagles, was the closest of the series. Mike DeLuca was on the mound for PBU and lasted 6 innings, giving up 7 hits and 7 earned runs. However, it was DeLuca's first 5 innings that were outstanding. After 5 innings, the score was only 2-1 in favor of Neumann. DeLuca had managed to keep the high-flying Knights tamed up to that point.
The Crimson Eagles were also able to count on hits from different players than in the previous games with
Jeremy McAlack (Newtown, PA / Council Rock North), Jon Moore (Shelton, CT / Shelton), and, once again, Jon Saville each earning a hit in the final game.
Dean Diernbach (Fountainville, PA / Central Bucks West) led the Crimson Eagles at the plate with 2 hits. Austin Arseneau scored PBU's only run on an Eric Hodges RBI, as PBU tied the score at 1-1 after one inning.
Neumann regained the lead in the top of the 2nd with a single run to take a 2-1 lead. For the next 3 innings, however, the Crimson Eagles shutout the Knights offense. Unfortunately, PBU's offense still strained to combine a number of hits together to add to their score.
In the top of the 6th inning, things broke open when Neumann notched 6 more runs, to extend their lead to 8-1, eventually taking the game 9-1.
The Crimson Eagles finished the season 6-31 overall and 1-17 in the CSAC. The one win in conference, over Centenary College, was the first conference win for the Crimson Eagles baseball program since joining the Colonial States Athletic Conference 3 years ago. Coach Haas and his team of mostly underclassmen will look to continue to grow next season and add to their number of conference wins in 2013.
