Langhorne, PA - Philadelphia Biblical University took an early 2-1 lead against the visiting Mighty Macs but couldn't hold on.
Box Score
After watching Immaculata take a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st inning, the Crimson Eagles responded with a strong showing early on. With his only hit of the day, junior centerfielder
Jeremy McAlack (Newtown, PA / Council Rock North) whacked a triple to the gap in right center.
Chad Hollinger (Leola, PA / Conestoga Valley) stepped up and lined a single to the same spot, sending McAlack home and quickly erasing any deficit. PBU was certainly making contact with the ball early, but back-to-back fly outs seemed to have halted the momentum when
Jon Sanville (Duncannon, PA / Susquenita) ripped yet another shot to right center, advancing Hollinger to second base.
Nick Schnittjer (Perkasie, PA / Pennridge) sent a single to left center that scored Hollinger just in time. As Sanville rounded second, he quickly realized he wasn't making it to third and found himself in no-man's land and eventually picked off at second to end the inning. But PBU did have a 2-1 lead.
That lead held until the third inning when the Mighty Macs put two more up on the board, taking a 3-2 lead. It was all Immaculata would need as the Mighty Macs used their deep bull-pin to blank the Crimson Eagles the rest of the way.
PBU were not without their chances though. Down 6-2 in the bottom of the 6th inning, PBU left two runners stranded on 2nd and 3rd. In both the 8th and 9th innings, the Crimson Eagles record doubles from
Eric Hodges (Newport News, VA / Denbigh Baptist) and Hollinger but couldn't make the most of their opportunities to get back in the game.
Chad Hollinger led all batters on the day, going a solid 4-for-5 and knocking in one RBI while also scoring a run.
Dean Diernbach (Fountainville, PA / Central Bucks West) pitched 7 innings, walking two and striking out 8.
Ian Zang (Alburtis, PA / Emmaus) came in the last two innings in relief.
The loss slips PBU to 4-20; 1-8 CSAC.
The Crimson Eagles will have two days off but are sure to be in for a challenge when they face 2011 NCAA Div III World Series finalists Keystone College on Friday. Game 1 of the series is in Langhorne, PA followed by a doubleheader in La Plume, PA on Saturday.
