Owls Use 6-run 8th To Down PBU

Box Score

Langhorne, PA
- The Owls of the University of Maine-Presque Isle made the long trek to Langhorne in a round-about way and came out on top 11-6. The Owls scored 9 of their runs in the final 2 innings while the Crimson Eagles tallied 4 of their 6 runs in the 8th and 9th as well.

Solid pitching from PBU's Jon Sanville (Duncannon, PA / Susquenita) and Presque Isle's Jordan Perry and strong defense from both squads saw a low scoring 2-2 game go into the 8th inning. It was there that the Owls used a 6-run spurt to break the game open and take an 8-2 lead. Presque Isle made it all the way through their batting order in the 8th, turning in 6 hits including a double from Cam Morrell.

Ian Zang (Alburtis, PA / Emmaus) came in relief for Sanville in the 8th and helped close out the inning with a strikeout of the Owl's Ted Walker.

The Crimson Eagles did have a response though and put together a few runs of their own. After Chad Hollinger (Leola, PA / Conestoga Valley) reached base on an error, Austin Arseneau (Maple Grove, MN / Homeschool) drilled a triple driving Hollinger home. With Arseneau in prime position, Mike Sundholm (Brooklyn, NY / Fort Hamilton) stepped up to the plate and drove in Arseneau with a single. Unfortunately, Sundholm was caught off guard when Eric Hodges (Newport News, VA / Denbigh Baptist) hit a line drive to Presque Isle's Justin Bergeron on third-base. Bergeron completed the double-play with a quick throw back to 1st.

The Owls would cushion themselves with 3 more runs in the top of the 9th with three consecutive hits following a lead-off walk.

PBU once again responded with runs of their own, but came up short. Things were looking prime for a comeback when Dean Diernbach (Fountainville, PA / Central Bucks West) and Mike DeLuca (Newburgh, NY / Marlboro) started the inning off with back-to-back singles, followed by a Mark Wasson (Willow Grove, PA / Homeschool) double that brought both base-runners home to make it 11-6, but that would be the last of the runs as the Owls retired 3 of the next 4 batters and earned their 2nd win of the season.

Sundholm went 3-for-5 with 1 RBI while Jon Moore (Shelton, CT / Shelton) went 2-for-3. Chad Hollinger, despite going 1-for-5, scored 1 run and batted in 3 others.

The Owls' Jordan Perry pitched a complete game and PBU's Sanville lasting 7.2 innings with Ian Zang coming in for relief.

PBU is now 1-14 and returns to action this Friday when they travel to Hackettstown, NJ to take on the Cyclones of Centenary College. Centenary then returns the favor by coming to Langhorne for a doubleheader on Saturday.
