Langhorne, PA - The first game and the second game between Philadelphia Biblical University and Lancaster Bible College were night and day.
In the first game of the day, both offenses hit the ground running with 7 runs scored in this tense rivalry. After the first inning jitters seemed to calm, only 5 combined runs were scored the remaining 6.5 innings.
To start the game, the Chargers were down 2 outs after their first two batters struck and popped out. They then put together a string of three consecutive singles followed by a double which cleared the bases of all previous runners, giving LBC a 3-0 lead off the bat.
The Crimson Eagles responded with 4 runs, taking a 4-3 lead into the 2nd inning.
PBU pitcher
Mike DeLuca (Newburgh, NY / Marlboro) put together several solid innings following the first inning, allowing only one more run the rest of the way. DeLuca retired 7 batters on strikeouts and giving up only 4 earned runs.
The Crimson Eagles made sure DeLuca's performance would stand up for the win by adding three runs in the bottom of the 6th inning, with the scored standing at 5-4, to open up an 8-4 gap. DeLuca would go the complete game and earning his first win of the season.
The win marked DeLuca's first collegiate career win.
Chad Hollinger (Leoloa, PA / Conestoga Valley) went 3-for-4, scoring 2 runs and knocking in one RBI.
Jon Moore (Shelton, CT / Shelton), despite going 0-for-4 knocked in 3 RBI's.
Game 2 saw the Crimson Eagles start off strong with 2 runs from
Jon Sanville (Duncannon, PA / Susquenita) and
Mike Sundholm (Brooklyn, NY / Fort Hamilton) early on. Things, however, took a turn in the top of the 3rd inning. With the score still standing at 2-0 to PBU, the Chargers rallied off 9 runs off of 8 hits, and 2 errors that seemed to come out of nowhere. And as quickly as the 9 run inning happened, it ended with three straight outs.
The Chargers bats weren't done yet though. The very next inning they tacked on another 6 runs extending their lead to 15-3.
The final few innings played out with a few runs but things were pretty much settled at that point. Both teams seemed happy with a win each.
Chad Hollinger went 2-for-4 in game 2, giving him a 5-for-8 day. Mike Sundholm, Jon Sanville, and
Nick Schnittjer (Perkasie, PA / Pennridge) also all went 2-for-4 in the second game, while freshman Eric Hodges (Newport News, VA / Denbigh Baptist) went 2-for-3.
LBC's Frank DiFilippo had the hot bat in the later match going 6-for-6, driving in 5 runs.
PBU finally gets its first win under its belt and can hopefully put some more tallies in the win column. The Crimson Eagles are now 1-13 with a trip to Front Royal, VA on the horizon. PBU will face Christendom College on Saturday in a doubleheader.
