Signs of Improvement

Langhorne, PA
- Their record may not show it but the Crimson Eagles are showing signs of life in small ways.

Philadelphia Biblical University's baseball team were swept in their first Colonial States Athletic Conference series against a deep Marywood squad.

The Pacers didn't have any monster offensive innings to speak of in scoring 10 runs, but they were only shutout in the 2nd inning. Marywood tallied 1 run apiece in each of the 1st, 3rd, and 4th innings. With the score 3-0 after 4 innings, you could feel the gap closing between Marywood and PBU. However, the Pacers would tack on 7 runs in the final 3 innings to finish up 10-2 winners.

In game one, PBU's Mike Sundholm (Brooklyn, NY / Fort Hamilton) went 2-for-3 and knocked in a run while freshman duo Eric Hodges (Newport News, VA / Denbigh Baptist) and Ian Zang (Alburtis, PA / Emmaus) both went 1-for-3. Zang scored one of 2 runs for the Crimson Eagles.

Both PBU scores came in the bottom of the 6th inning, one off of a Sundholm double that sent Chad Hollinger (Leola, PA / Conestoga Valley) home for the earned run.

Mike DeLuca (Newburgh, NY / Marlboro) struck out 3 batters in 5.1 innings pitched, allowing 6 earned runs. Justin Nolan (Philadelphia, PA / International Christian) came in as relief, fanning 2 batters and allowing 0 earned runs in 1.2 innings pitched.

Marywood's Tim Freda pitched a complete game and retire 11 Crimson Eagles on strikeouts.

In game 2, Marywood made quick work to make sure they weren't caught by surprise by the Crimson Eagles. Not wanting another close game early on, Marywood scored all 15 runs in the first 4 innings.

Jason Aikens pitched a complete game for the Pacers allowing only 3 hits and getting the shutout in the process.

Nick Schnittjer (Perkasie, PA / Pennridge) and Chad Hollinger each went 1-for-3 in game 2 with only Jon Moore (Shelton, CT / Shelton) averaging better as he went 1-for-2. Marywood's Jon Woytach went a perfect 3-for-3.

Despite falling to 0-11 on the season, PBU has played some pretty tough competition, including several scholarship schools. It's sure to prepare them for the rest of the season which still has a long ways to go.

Marywood jumps to 8-5.
