FLEMINGTON, NJ - The good news from Monday's doubleheader with Centenary College is that - following a rough four game patch - PBU's bats finally found new life. However, the team's effort at the plate wasn't enough during a pair of losses to the Cyclones.
After being shutout in three of their last four contests while managing just a single run during the span, the Crimson Eagles finally had an offensive resurgence.
Despite capitalizing for just three scores during a 9-3 loss, PBU actually outhit the Cyclones (12-11) during their opening skirmish but were crippled with seven runners left on base for the game. Centenary's patience at the plate also paid off as the group collected six free passes to first base.
The host group build up a 6-0 edge by the top of the fourth inning before the Crimson Eagles finally got on the board. The visitors smacked around four hits during the stanza, countering with two runs to bring the count to 6-2.
However, Centenary managed to tack on three additional scores over the next three innings, pushing their cushion to as great as seven runs before a purely aesthetic score from PBU in the top of the seventh capped things a 9-3.
Shawn Bramble finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a solo RBI while Nicholas Schnittjer posted a 2-for-3 effort with a pair of ribbies.
In game two, the Crimson Eagles logged seven runs on 10 hits but failed to slow down the Cyclones in the batters box as the host group ignited for 16 runs on 15 hits in their second consecutive win over PBU.
Centenary charted 21 base runners in all for the game during a contest that signals the group's greatest run production of the season to-date.
After taking a 4-0 lead after two, PBU watch helplessly as Centenary pounded 14 runs over the next three frames, including a seven score outburst during the bottom of the third.
Jeremy McAlack was flawless in the leadoff spot for PBU as the rookie outfielder finished 3-for-3 at the dish while walking once with two RBI's. Chad Hollinger, Caleb Reimer, and Schnittjer all added two hits in the losing effort.
The Crimson Eagles are primed to return to action this Friday in their last home contest of the year. The baseball team will host Gwynedd-Mercy College at 3:00 pm on senior day.
