LANGHORNE, PA - Falling 13-9 during a high scoring affair in game one Saturday afternoon, the Crimson Eagles regrouped for a 6-3 triumph over Baptist Bible College in the nightcap.
After taking a 4-2 edge early in the opening contest, the Crimson Eagles fell victim to 11 runs from the Defenders over the final four stanzas as the visitors ripped off nine hits over a three inning span to break open the game.
Down 13-5, PBU countered with a four score frame during the bottom of the sixth thanks to four singles from the beef of PBU's line-up. However, Baptist kept the Crimson Eagles at arms length in the bottom of the seventh by putting out three of four batters to close out the contest.
The host group left six runners on bag for the game and were hampered with nine walks given up as Baptist collected their first victory in nearly a month. Four players churned out two hits for PBU while all nine players reached first at least once in the loss.
But following the opening game meltdown, the Crimson Eagles responded with their most impressive defensive performance to-date in game two.
With sophomore hurler Dean Diernbach spearheading the effort on the mound, the host group allowed the Defenders to manufacture just three runs during a 6-3 victory for PBU. Diernbach allowed just two earned runs while walking only three throughout the seven inning scuffle in what marks his first win of the season.
The lanky southpaw had help, however, as the Crimson Eagle offense battered around 12 hits for the second consecutive contest while scoring five runs over the final three innings.
After going ahead 3-1 during the top of the fourth, Baptist watched their small edge quickly evaporate as the Crimson Eagles crossed home three times in the fifth frame alone to take the lead.
It was a margin Diernbach and company would put a death-grip on as PBU shutout the Defenders over the final three innings to secure their third victory in five tries.
Mike Sundholm put up three hits in the win and Shawn Bramble added two triples from the batters box.
The Crimson Eagles improve to 3-12 on the year following Saturday's double-header.
The baseball squad will look to keep their recent momentum rolling during non-conference action on Tuesday against Penn State Abington. Game time in Langhorne is 3:00 pm.
