Crimson Eagles Fall in Season Opener

WILLIAMSBURG, KY - The University of the Cumberlands spoiled the baseball sqaud's season opener Wednesday as the Patriots posted back to back triumphs of 15-2 and 13-3 over the Crimson Eagles.

The Patriots jumped out early during the first game of the day, gathering a 4-0 edge by the end of the opening stanza. After a scoreless second inning from both squads, Cumberland bombed 10 scores during the aforementioned third frame, sprinkling five hits and garnering six walks throughout the back-breaking period.

The Crimson Eagles responded with two scores during the top of the fourth but it would be all the offense PBU could muster in a contest that saw the group collect just six hits at the plate.

The Patriots belted a .435 collective team batting average during five innings of work in the opening contest while Cumberands' pitching staff limited their counterpart to a .273 clip.

PBU transfer Chad Hollinger posted two hits in three at bats for the Crimson Eagles while notching one of the team's two runs in the game. Four other players logged a solo hit for the visitors.

In game two, the host group scored three runs during each of the first four innings, ballooning a 13-3 edge by the top of the fifth. Cumberland smoked 13 hits in their second consecutive win, knocking around a .500 batting average in the process.

The group snagged eight stolen bags in nine attempts en route to their third straight win.

Mike Sundholm drilled two hits and scored one of PBU's three runs on the day. Ryan Eshleman and Nicholas Schnittjer each posted one knock.

The baseball squad will return to action tomorrow morning against the University of the Cumberlands during a single game at 11:00 am.
