ABINGTON, PA - Penn State Abington used a seven run eighth inning to help keep the baseball team at arms length Friday afternoon, ultimately downing the Crimson Eagles 14-6.
Holding just a one run lead entering the bottom of the eighth, the Nittany Lions ripped off six hits and took advantage of two Crimson Eagle defensive mistakes to help break open the close-knit game. PBU was hindered with six costly errors for the contest, tying their second largest number of slip-ups in a single outing for the season.
The visitors notched at least one score in five different innings and recorded just their second double-digit hit affair of the season, spreading 13 knocks around for the game in their best offensive showing thus far. The loss also saw PBU produce an extremely rare triple play in the bottom of the first on the defensive side.
Phil Haas went three for four at the plate with a walk and a run scored and Rudy Sheptock put in a three for five performance with a ribby. Tom Fenwick and Mike Sundholm both added two hits.
The Crimson Eagles will get back into action Saturday afternoon when the group hosts Penn State Berks in their second straight non-conference outing. Action against Berks is scheduled to begin at noon.
