WENHAM, MA - It ended up being one of those opening nights where you leave crossing your fingers, simply hoping that your first match of the year is a fluke.
A 5-0 blanking to open the season isn't exactly what the Crimson Eagle field hockey team envisioned on their way up to Massachusetts Friday afternoon. But, unfortunately, the five goal loss is exactly what happened after PBU found themselves up against an extremely veteran Endicott squad that has made the ECAC playoffs each of the past six straight years and currently boasts eight seniors on it's roster.
So almost ironically, it was the Gulls' underclassmen that made the difference in Friday's opener.
Endicott sophomores Joanne Reid and Lindsay Mills each buried a pair of goals while freshman forward Anna Giannoni got things rolling with 20:55 remaining in the first half, powering home her first collegiate score to give the Gulls a 1-0 advantage. Just minutes later, Reid doubled the Gulls' edge to help give Endicott a two-goal lead to head into the break.
Reid struck again early in the second 35 minutes and Mills erased any hope of a late game Crimson Eagle rally by sinking consecutive scores to put Endicott up five-nil. Looking to erase the shutout, PBU made several final attempts in the waning minutes but the Gulls' defense remained unyielding, shielding off numerous corner opportunities to keep the shutout intact.
PBU drops to 0-1 with the loss while Endicott improves to 1-0. The Crimson Eagles will take on host Gordon College tomorrow morning at 11:00 am.
