LANGHORNE, PA - If the field hockey team ever needed a win, Saturday was the day.
Thankfully, the Crimson Eagles pulled a victory nothing short of miraculous against visiting Keystone College, as PBU's back line withstood 20 Keystone rockets to hang onto a 3-1 triumph in a match that holds significant postseason implications.
Sitting on the outside of the playoff picture looking in to enter Saturday’s bout, PBU came through in the clutch against a Keystone squad that for all statistical purposes held several significant advantages on paper.
The Giants entered Saturday’s contest ranked first in the conference in total shutouts and were third overall in points allowed per game. Additionally, the Crimson Eagles were facing one of the top scorers in the CSAC, the Giants’ Yarrish Kellina, who averages roughly 1.50 points per game on her own accord.
But despite all odds, PBU overcame all of the necessary hurdles in the teams’ third CSAC victory of the season. Senior Erin Rohrer helped carry the load for PBU, contributing in all three of the host squad scores on the day, finishing the afternoon with two goals and an assist.
Rohrer dropped in her first goal just 4:48 into play off a feed from rookie Erica Yordy to help give PBU a 1-0 advantage. Sophomore defender Megan Heater carded her second score of the season several minutes before the break to give the Crimson Eagles a two goal cushion during the intermission.
Keystone’s Meagan Cunningham responded with a score just four minutes into the back end of play, but Rohrer struck again at the 56:07 mark off another feed from Yordy to push PBU’s edge back to two scores in the final 15 minutes of play.
The Giants managed a flurry of shots late in the game, out-bombing the host squad 11-4 in the second stanza alone. But thankfully, PBU’s back four along with the outstanding play of junior keeper Lauren Roth helped the group hold on for their fourth overall win of the year.
PBU improves to 4-12 (3-4 CSAC) while Keystone drops to 7-7 on the season (4-3 CSAC).
The team will pack their bags in anticipation of their last regular season road contest this Tuesday when PBU squares off with Rosemont College at 4:00 pm.
