LANGHORNE, PA - The Cairn University Department of Athletics hosted the 9th edition of the Highlander Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards on Sunday night, April 27, 2025, held for the third year in a row inside the William F. Chatlos Chapel.
The program honored multiple career and season accomplishments as well as team recognition and annual awards for the 2024-2025 academic year and athletic season.
Highlighting the event was the awarding of Cairn's five traditional senior awards, one of the most time-honored traditions of Cairn Athletics. Receiving one of these five senior awards is the highest honor of a Highlander's career.
(David C. Unger Award for Service, Randy Ostien Award for Courage and Perseverance, Dan Richner Athletic Leadership Award, Clarence E. Mason Award for Athletic Excellence, Martha MacCullough Award for Athletic Recognition).
The
David. C Unger Award for Service was presented to baseball senior pitcher
Joe Battaglia (Franklin, TN / Brentwood Academy) for his years of service to Cairn University Athletics as both an accomplished student-athlete as well as a distinguished student assistant, faithfully serving on both the prestigious Cairn Athletic Communications staff in numerous capacities including lead statistician, play-by-play, public address, and more. Battaglia has demonstrated a true love and care for our athletic programs with a desire to make the student-athlete experience the best it can be. His willingness to serve is evident in his contributions not only on the baseball field (13 wins, 107 career strikeouts) but also for other programs as he has been a consistent face at almost every non-baseball home contest since his freshman year in 2022. Battaglia also served as an Assistant Director of Cairn's Intramural Program before taking over the program in 2023. His unwavering support and service to Cairn's athletic programs makes him deserving of the David C. Unger Award for Service. The David C. Unger Award for Service is presented to the senior student-athlete who has contributed most to their athletic program through service, faithfulness, and spirit, with a true love of participation, sacrifice, and commitment to Highlander Athletics.
The Randy Ostein Award for Courage and Perseverance went to women's soccer/softball student-athlete
Julia Bruestle (Abington, PA / Abington). Bruestle battled through both chronic and

extensive injuries throughout her four years at Cairn, which would have deterred most athletes from returning to the field. Instead, Bruestle pushed herself above and beyond, participating in a season of women's volleyball her freshman year before a three-year career as an impact player in the women's soccer program and a four-year starter for softball. In addition to her tenacity and toughness, her leadership and desire to serve her teammates and the Cairn community sets her apart. Over her time at Cairn, Bruestle has served as the President of the Health and Physical Education Club, Treasurer of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and represented Cairn University on the Future Professionals Advisory Committee of the Pennsylvania Society of Health and Physical Educators. Cairn Women's Soccer Head Coach Kailey Bartholomew remarked on Bruestle, "JB is an exceptional athlete and spiritual mentor known for her contagious spirit, faithfulness and leadership both on and off the field. As a team shepherd, she inspired the student athlete body with her sportsmanship and resilience. Resilience even when faced with injuries and adversity. Despite battling a rare condition and causing extreme pain, JB's unwavering faith in Christ fueled her determination to overcome obstacles and rejoin the soccer program. JB's perseverance was exemplified during a fitness test where, despite medical advice, she ran alongside her teammates prioritizing their success over her physical limitations. Her contributions to the soccer program have left a lasting impact." The Randy Ostein Award recognizes the senior student-athlete who demonstrated the highest level of courage, perseverance, and consistent loyalty to their program, no matter what adversity he or she faced.
The female recipient of the Dan Richner Athletic Leadership Award was women's basketball/women's tennis student-athlete
Kailee Sobrino (Vail, AZ / Empire). Sobrino was an accomplished three year floor general for women's basketball program. Perhaps no stat is more indicative of Sobrino's leadership and dedication than her career average minutes played per game. Since her freshman year, she's averaged almost 38 minutes per game, two minutes shy of a full game. During her senior season she averaged 39 and a half minutes per game, meaning on average she got one 30 second breather and in 17 games this season she never left the floor at all, playing more minutes per game than all but one other athlete in all of the NCAA. That level of dedication and commitment is certainly worthy of being honored on its own, but it is Sobrino's high level of character and dedication to leadership despite adversity that makes her a worthy recipient of the Dan Rickner Award. Playing for a different head coach in each of her three seasons, Sobrino has been incredibly consistent and reliable when the circumstances surrounding her have not been so. Even when she stepped away from basketball for a season, she did not stop looking for ways to serve her fellow athletes, joining the women's tennis team to help support their roster size and impacting another group of athletes along the way. She's been a dedicated member of Health & Physical Education Club and the Student Athlete of Advisory Committee, ensuring that her impact and leadership extends far beyond the basketball court. Head Women's Basketball coach Amie Eppolito remarked on Kailee's leadership and impact. "Kailee is much deserving of the Dan Richner Award for many reasons. Through Kailee's years at Cairn, she has been an intense competitor and natural leader. Her passion for the Lord and wanting to be a servant leader for him is very evident in how she is as a person, as a student and as an athlete. Kailee is a teacher at heart and wants to inspire the best out of her teammates and she expects the most out of herself. More than anyone else, she's one of those players that a coach would love to clone and keep for more than four years because of her consistent display of Christian leadership, perseverance and success on and off the basketball court."

The male recipient of the award was men's soccer midfielder
Chase Segool (Aston Twp., PA / Sun Valley). Segool has fully embodied this role as a leader of men over his four years in a very successful men's soccer program. A team captain, he led his team from the midfield, appearing in 57 games for the Highlanders and was poised for a successful senior campaign until he was sidelined with an injury less than halfway through the first game of the season. This devastating setback did nothing to deter Segool's commitment to leadership. He poured into his teammates and supported their success from the sidelines. Off the field, Chase was a dedicated student and active on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and his high character and maturity were clearly seen by every coach and student athlete he interacted with. Head Men's Soccer coach
Luke Gibson spoke highly of Chase's leadership and impact on his teammates. "In my years of coaching, Chase is among the finest leaders I've ever had the privilege to coach. He always puts the team first, even when it went against what was good for him. As an individual, he built meaningful relationships and took great care in developing the next group of leaders. When the entire trajectory of his senior season changed 40 minutes into the first game of the season, it took him merely 15 minutes to go from heartbreak to being the loudest voice on the sideline picking guys up. Leaders lead and Chase embodies that because of his consistency as a program leader regardless of personal circumstances."
The Richner Award is presented to both a male and female senior student-athlete who compete with an attitude of Christ-like leadership, exhibit the highest degree of sportsmanship, are both teachable and coachable, and demonstrate dedication, commitment, and responsibility.
The female honoree for the Clarence E. Mason Award for Athletic Excellence was women's volleyball outside hitter
Caroline Conrad (Bangkok, Thailand / International Community School). It is rare for a collegiate athlete to sustain a high level of success over their entire careers. It is even more rare that an athlete can sustain their own personal success while being able to mark the turnaround of their program alongside their career. Conrad is one of those rare athletes. In the four years prior to her freshman season, the women's volleyball program had a .239 win percentage and was struggling to find its footing amidst years of coaching turnover. Caroline's steadiness, reliability and incredible all around skill was instrumental in the turnaround of that program from her first game in a Highlander uniform, leading her team to a .620 win percentage and four-straight runs in the postseason over the course of her career. She is the first player in program history to be named to an all conference team every year of their career and her career accolades speak for themselves. She was honored so consistently only the second player in program history to have more than 800 kills and 1200 digs. Conrad was the definition of a six rotation player whose dependability was never in question. Off the court, she embodied the mantra of student first, athlete second, maintaining a high level of academic achievement and community involvement.
Baseball first baseman
Tyler Warr (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) collected the honor on the men's side. Anyone that's been around Cairn baseball for the last decade or so knows that there's been a single name all over the record books with numbers no one really expected would ever be touched. That name is Caleb Lang '16, an All-American outfielder who holds most of the statistical hitting records in program history. Enter
Tyler Warr, whose incredible career has seen him knocking down single season and career records left and right on his way to making the case for himself as the greatest to ever play in a Highlander uniform. A four time First Team All-Conference honoree, the 2024 United East Player of the Year, a regional All American, Tyler has certainly racked up the external accolades over the years at a rate not seen since the aforementioned Lang. As mentioned, Tyler's name is now all over the Cairn record books, holding the single season records for batting average, hits on base percentage and triples. He knocked on the door of setting the career record for hits all season as his 252 career hits through 165 games finished one shy of the program record.
The Mason Award for Athletic Excellence recognizes one male and one female student-athlete who have each made the greatest contribution to their athletic programs through a high level of competition, leadership, and sportsmanship.
The senior award recognition culminated with the presentation of the Martha MacCullough Award for Athletic Recognition was awarded to men's soccer midfielder
Moses Beers (Lancaster, PA / Manheim Twp.). It is incredibly difficult to stand out as an athlete in the long and storied history of the men's soccer program at Cairn. A program with a history stretching back decades with national champions, All Americans, and professional soccer players making a name for themselves in the history of the program. Despite the pressure of rising to the success of the men who came before him, Moses can confidently end his career as one of the greatest to ever play in a Highlander uniform. The ultimate facilitator, his 44 career assists stands as the high mark of any came in soccer player in the NCAA era, breaking a program record that has stood for almost 20 years. He was a four time football first team all conference player and the conference player of the year in both 2022 and 2023, the only athlete in program history to win back to back player of the year awards. A College Sports Communicators Academic All-American, the first in Cairn University history, and the 2024 United East Male Scholar Athlete of the Year for Men's Soccer, Moses is as well rounded off the field as he is on only adding to his status as one of the greatest of all time. The MacCullough Award is bestowed upon a senior student-athlete who by his or her outstanding athletic achievements over multiple seasons, has brought the highest level of regional and national attention to their athletic program.
Additionally, the following individual career accomplishments were acknowledged:
- Men's Basketball: Josiah Hardy's 1,000 career points
- Women's Volleyball: Olivia Zepp's 2,000 career assists, Caroline Conrad 1,000 career digs
- Men's Soccer: Jesse Brittain's 100 career points
- Men's Volleyball: Josh Adler 1,000 career assists
- Baseball: Zach Bauers setting the program record for runners caught stealing, Joe Battaglia 100 career strikeouts, Ronadinho Alcin 100 career strikeouts, Tyler Warr 200 career hits, Dylan Jackson 100 career hits, Will Wikner 100 career hits, Zach Bauers 100 career hits, Tyler Warr setting the program record for career RBI
- Softball: Abbi Heacock 100 career hits
- Lacrosse: Nico Cione 800 career saves
The following is a list of all the other awards presented at the HESPYs ceremony:
Department Awards:
Male Rookie of the Year:
Men's Soccer/Lacrosse freshman
Emanuel Lazor (Midland Park, NJ / Eastern Christian) is the Cairn Athletics Male Rookie of the Year. First joining the men's soccer program in the fall as a midfielder with a lot of talent, Lazor switched his position to center back a few weeks into the season and embraced his new role despite playing as a defender. Lazor finished the season third on his team in goals and fourth in points and his two game winning goals are second on the squad only behind United East Player of the Year,
Jesse Brittain. His all around impact landed him on a Second Team All-Conference recognition, the only Cairn Men's Soccer rookie and only one of four freshmen in the United East to be named to any All-Conference team for soccer. Head Men's Soccer Coach
Luke Gibson had this to say as he reflected on Lazor's impact in his first year as a Highlander. "When Manny started at center back, the trajectory of our season changed. His confidence, consistent communication and ability to score big goals was exceptional. Just as important, he was coachable, eager to learn and get better, which was a huge reason he was one of the best defenders in the United East." Not content to take a break in the spring, Manny then joined the men's lacrosse team to help support a rebuilding roster and instantly made an impact on that team as well, recording a goal and assist while causing two turnovers before he was sidelined with an injury. Head Lacrosse Coach
Matt LoStracco also remarked on Lazor's impact when he joined the lacrosse team. "Manny joined our team a few weeks into the season and instantly helped bring an extra element that helped to elevate our team by taking pressure off of other players. His grit to always want to be out there for his teammates and enjoyment for the sport is something that will carry him through both soccer and lacrosse, but also in life."
Female Rookie of the Year:
Softball freshman utility player
Riley Curtis (Newark, DE / Odessa) finished her first season as a Highlander uniform, leading her team in almost every statistical category. Batting average, on base percentage, hits, doubles, home runs, RBI, slugging percentage and on base percentage, Riley finds herself on top. Perhaps even more impressively, she's been able to maintain incredible high level of offensive production while playing all over the field, recording innings in every defensive position except for catcher. Head Softball Coach Brady Acuff had this to say about Riley's versatility and skill beyond her years. "Riley has been absolutely invaluable this year to our team with small numbers, coaching and personnel changes. We had a lot of gaps to fill and Riley stepped up beautifully into any role. Since day one, she's consistently shown up to practices and games, ready, ready and excited to play. Her efforts during practices and games and her individual work has made her a standout athlete for our team this season. I always knew I could rely on her to play any position when called and for her to do it with enthusiasm. Even if she has not played that position before. She has set the standard of what Cairn Softball will look like as we grow the program and it has been an absolute pleasure to coach her as an invaluable utility player whose career is off to an incredible start."
Male Breakout Athlete of the Year:
Men's Volleyball sophomore outside hitter
Sam Poirier (Nogyang, South Korea / International Christian School Uijeongbu) is the Cairn Athletics Male Breakout Athlete of the Year.

In his breakout sophomore season, Poirier did more than just emerge as one of the best players on his team, but grew into one of the best offensive men's volleyball players in the country. Relied on for the majority of his team's offense, Sam more than delivered on a nightly basis. His 296 kills were more than double his next closest teammate, and his 4.63 kills per set places him in the top five in program history and the second best in the entire NCAA Division 3. His most impressive accolade came against conference opponent St. Elizabeth when he put down 40 kills in a single match, breaking Justin Brubaker's 17 year program record and setting the high mark for the most kills by any player in a single match in the entire NCAA division. After his incredible season, Sam was named the conference's Offensive Player of the Year, only the third player in program history to earn that honor. Head Men's Volleyball Coach Shea Scott had this to say about Sam's incredible sophomore season, "Last spring during our postseason review, I told Sam I believe he had the potential to be one of the best outside hitters in the country, and he followed that conversation with a historic season as his coach. It was incredibly gratifying seeing Sam take the leap into superstardom for for our program. And while the numbers and awards are flashy, what really sticks out to me is the humility and grace that Sam carries himself with. To call Sam a breakout athlete is an understatement of colossal proportions, and I can't imagine anyone more deserving of this award." The incredible potential that Coach Scott saw in Sam was more than realized during his historic sophomore season.
Female Breakout Athlete of the Year:
Women's Volleyball sophomore middle
Georgianna Thorpe (Southampton, PA / William Tennent) had a great example in last year's winner,
Hendryl Peabody, playing right beside her on the court. Despite returning Peabody and fellow offensive superstar
Caroline Conrad to the team this season, Georgie made a commitment to standing out among her peers. She finished her sophomore campaign with the third most kills in the women's volleyball team and led her squad in blocks. But it was her massive leap in hitting efficiency that truly made this a breakout season for Georgie. Her.337 hitting percentage is the second highest efficiency in program history and placed her among the most efficient hitters in the NCAA this year. Her offensive prowess earned her a Second Team All-Conference knock, the first of her career, as well as College Sports Communicators Academic All-District recognition As a player to watch as she progresses throughout her career, Head Women's Volleyball Coach Whitney Seidel had this to say about Georgianna's breakout sophomore season; "As a coach, there are few things more rewarding than watching an athlete realize their own potential and catch fire. The leap that Georgie made as an athlete between her freshman and sophomore year is a perfect example of that breakout process. As a freshman, we knew that Georgie had so much potential, but she came into her sophomore season with a heightened discipline and competitive fire that absolutely took her game to the next level. Her efficiency as a hitter and discipline as a blocker certainly stand out from this breakout season, but it is her volleyball IQ and maturity beyond her years that truly set her apart. We are so proud of her growth and cannot wait to see what the second half of her career has in store for her."
Male Scholar Athlete of the Year:
The 2025 Male Scholar Athlete of the Year with a 3.92 cumulative GPA in Computer Science is dual-sport senior athlete
Chris Eelman (North Haledon, NJ / Hawthorne Christian). A four year two sport athlete, participating in both soccer and basketball, Chris has certainly made his mark as an impact player for both sports, recording over 1700 minutes between the pipes as a goalkeeper for men's soccer while also appearing in 40 games for men's basketball. While balancing the responsibilities of participating in sports year round, Chris was able to maintain a 392 GPA in the difficult major of computer science while at the same time pursuing a Master's degree in Business Administration. For his efforts, Chris was named the United East Elite 20 Award winner for men's soccer as a student athlete with the highest GPA in the men's soccer championship Final Four, the first Cairn student-athlete ever to be honored with an Elite 20 award. Head Men's Basketball Coach
Jason O'Connell also remarked on Chris's impact as a student athlete. "I am thrilled that Chris was selected as the Male Scholar
Athlete of the Year. This award is a testament to his commitment to his academic excellence. The fact that he was able to be a two sport athlete and have so much success in the classroom shows how well he was able to balance both academics and athletics. His success is a reflection of who he is as a man and his dedication to Christ and pursuit of excellence." Because of his ability to balance four years of participation in two sports while maintaining a standard of academic excellence, we are honored to name
Chris Eelman the 2025 male scholar athlete of the Year.
Female Scholar Athlete of the Year:
The 2025 Female Scholar Athlete of the Year with a 3.92 cumulative GPA in Computer Science is women's volleyball senior student-athlete Caroline Conrad (Bangkok, Thailand / International Community School). A highly accomplished athlete who is also achieving at a high level in a very different computer science program. Caroline Conrad is the definition of a student athlete, Student first, athlete second. She has demonstrated a remarkable ability to dominate on the volleyball court while balancing multiple extracurricular involvements. Despite her busy schedule, Caroline was able to have the best year of her already excellent career in 2024, earning a First Team United East All-Conference award while finishing top two in the conference in both points and kills per set and becoming just the fifth player in program history to cross the 1000 digs threshold. Because of both her dominance on the volleyball court, her academic success and her dynamic campus involvement, Caroline was named the 2024 United East Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year for Women's Volleyball, becoming the first female athlete in Cairn Athletics history to be recognized at that level by the conference office. Head Women's Volleyball Coach Whitney Seidel had this to say about Caroline's impressive career as a student athlete, "A team captain and phenomenal athlete who had one of the greatest all around careers in Cairn Women's Volleyball program history, Caroline is just as impressive off the court as a scholar who has been highly involved on Cairn's campus. Her leadership and abilities have played a critical role in the growth of our program over the span of her career. I can't think of anyone who epitomizes the Scholar Athlete Award more than Caroline and I'm so incredibly proud of her and honored to have been her coach for four years." Because of her consistent success and high level of achievement both on the volleyball court and in the classroom, we are honored to name Caroline Conrad the 2025 Female Scholar Athlete of the Year.
Male Athlete of the Year:
Men's Soccer senior forward
Jesse Brittain (Chester, PA / The Christian Academy) was named the Cairn Athletic Male Athlete of the Year. While the race for Male Athlete of the Year is once again a close call, it is fitting that
Jesse Brittain emerges on top as his senior season was his greatest in an already incredible career. Bookending his career with major awards, Jesse was the Colonial States Athletic Conference Rookie of
the year in 2020, then proceeded to secure first team all conference nods in 2021, 22, 23 and 24, capping off his impressive career by being named the 2024 United East Men's Soccer Player of the Year. The dynamic forward had an incredible senior season to earn that top accolade, leading the conference with nine goals and three assists in league play and was twice named the United East Offensive Player of the Week. His 14 overall goals placed him in the top 20 in the NCAA in goals per game and he was additionally honored with a first Team All-Region, now for the second time in his career. His career numbers speak for themselves. He finishes fifth in Cairn Men's Soccer program history and career goals with 51 and is only the sixth player in program history to cross the century mark in career points with 124 total head men's soccer coach
Luke Gibson had this to say
about Jesse's incredible final season. "Jesse was absolutely dominant this season in a special career. This was his finest season. He scored huge goals, hit special milestones and the accolades of Player of the Year and First Team All-Region were well deserved because of its milestone senior season after what was already an incredible career"
Female Athlete of the Year:
The Cairn Athletic Female Athlete of the Year award recognized Women's Cross Country sophomore runner
Clarisse Hayden (Bangkok, Thailand / International Community School). While Cross Country is certainly

a team sport, it is one that is uniquely reliant on the individual efforts of its athletes to lead their team to success. Clarisse entered her sophomore season already an accomplished runner, finishing second in the United East Championship meet and being named First Team All-Conference in her freshman season last year. Her achievements during her second season, however, elevated her status as one of the greatest runners in Cairn history. Topping the podium in four races this season, Clarisse consistently broke her own personal record times with none more timely or impressive than in the United East Championship race in November when Clarisse outraced 87 other runners to claim the crown as the fastest runner in the conference. With a new personal best time to boot, her individual championship sets her apart as the only Highlander ever to win a conference championship race. Head Women's Cross Country Coach
Jody Luther remarked on Clarisse's incredible sophomore season. "Clarisse has been a valuable member of the Cross Country team for the the past two years. In that time, she's grown from being a great freshman runner to a truly impressive competitor and champion this season. Anyone watching Clarisse run and race can see both her determination and the joy that she has in competing to win. The Cross Country team has been blessed by her dedication and the hard work that she led the women's team to a surprising second place finish of the championship this season. Anyone who knows Clarisse realizes that she does not want any recognition for her accomplishments. Instead, she is committed to giving the glory to the Lord. Clarisse's humility and victory and her intentional care towards opposing teams clearly demonstrates the character of Christ because of her race to the top of the conference while humbly bringing her teammates alongside her."
Student Assistant of the Year:
Kyla "KJ" Johnson was recognized as Cairn Athletics' Student Assistant of the Year. KJ served as Lead Photographer for the 2024-2025 athletic year, working with the

Athletic Communications staff to develop the current staff of junior photographers as well as assist in the onboarding of new members of the creative media team while cultivating a culture of service to the department & student-athletes. KJ has been behind the scenes of creating and sustaining the consistent image of Cairn Athletics for the last four plus years, getting involved before she was enrolled as a student. She's had the pleasure of covering contests team photos, and special events for all 13 athletic programs over her time, traveling at times on her own expense to photograph the Highlanders in action at notable venues. As Lead Photographer, KJ has helped to foster a culture of pursuing excellence together as a group and passing on skills and tools of the trade to colleagues on staff, constant pursuit of improvement with research and a network of professionals. She's been recognized by the United East conference for her work, earning recognition in the conference's 2024 Posed Photo of the Year contest as she earned third place. KJ continued to add more elements to her craft, learning videography to assist in bringing in over 100,000 engagements on Cairn Athletics and team social media accounts, also taking charge in graphic design, social media coordinating, gameday operations, and projects for Cairn's Communications & Marketing Department. KJ has been an answer to many needs of two Athletic Communications Directors, with the same dedication of a student-athlete when it comes to the work and time she puts in.
