CSAC Championship MVB Game Notes

Men’s Volleyball: CSAC Championship Match Central

| By:
LANGHORNE, Pa. – The No. 1 seed Cairn University men's volleyball team (15-4, 12-0 CSAC) will compete in its second-consecutive Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship match on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. inside the Mason Activity Center against No. 2 seed Saint Elizabeth University (14-5, 10-2 CSAC).

THE SERIES:

The undisputed two best teams in the CSAC, Cairn holds a 4-1 record in the all-time series against the Eagles. Saint Elizabeth's lone win over the Highlanders came back in 2020. The Highlanders won the 2021 CSAC Championship Title in five sets over the Eagles after coming back from a 2-0 deficit in Morristown. Cairn has won both contests against the Eagles this year, albeit very competitive contests. Cairn earned a 3-2, five-set triumph on the road over the Eagles in the last bout between the two teams and scored a 3-1 win inside the Mason Activity Center earlier this season.

TRENDS:

After starting the season 1-4, The Highlanders have gone 14-consecutive matches without a loss, achieving 12 shutouts during that span. Cairn has been dominant at home, posting a 9-1 record inside the Mason Activity Center to this point. Saint Elizabeth enters Saturday's contest with a 10-2 conference record, its only losses coming against the Highlanders. The Eagles hold a 4-3 record on the road this season.

THE COACHES:

Cairn University first-year Head Coach Spencer Jacob has the Highlanders knocking on the door of their second-straight CSAC Title after leading the Highlanders to 15 wins and an unblemished 12-0 record in conference play this season. Jacob spent several years coaching overseas in the high school ranks before taking the helm at Cairn. Saint Elizabeth fourth-year Head Coach Bill Condon has led the Eagles to back-to-back conference championship appearances. Also familiar with the high school ranks, Condon coaches at Morristown High School where he was the girls' varsity coach for five year.

OFFENSIVE FIREPOWER:

The Highlanders have several offensive options heading into the conference championship match, headlined by 2022 CSAC Player of the Year Caleb Horning, Horning leads the team with 144 kills and has a hitting percentage of .316. He also has 37 service aces and 11 blocks. Horning is followed offensively by sophomores Will Nase and Joe Poirier. Nase, a 2022 All-CSAC First Team selection and 2021 CSAC Rookie of the Year, is second on the team with 112 total kills, while Poirier commands the middle with a conference-leading .399 hitting percentage and leads the team with 36 total blocks. Highlander junior Shea Scott is slated to be the setter for Cairn's championship contest, as he leads the conference with 379 total assists. Saint Elizabeth relies strongly on 2021 CSAC Player of the Year Kodi Peters, who paces the entire conference with 166 kills this season.

DIGS FOR DAYS:

The Highlander defense is headed by 2021 and 2022 CSAC Defensive Player of the Year Josh Moyer, who leads the Highlanders with 155 digs and committed just 11 reception errors on 298 total attempts. Saint Elizabeth's defensive scheme features several different players, with three having over 80 digs on the season.
