Women’s Soccer: Marzinke’s Decisive Tally Lifts Highlanders past Rosemont in CSAC Quarterfinals

LANGHORNE, Pa. – The No. 4 seed Cairn University women's soccer team won, 1-0, at home in their Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) quarterfinal matchup against No. 5 seed Rosemont College on Monday evening.

"We responded to the situations so well tonight." remarked Head Coach Kailey Bartholomew. "The weather was brutal for the second time playing Rosemont this year, however, the girls remained composed. I am beyond proud of their response to difficulty. We are very happy with tonight's solid team win. We will rest up and come out even better for our next playoff match. Cairn soccer is truly coming alive."

Cairn (11-6-1, 5-3 CSAC) wasted no time jumping ahead over Rosemont (5-7-3, 4-4-1 CSAC) when fifth-year Victoria Ruitto (Ellington, CT / The Cornerstone Christian School) delivered a through ball inside the box in the 13th minute. Rosemont attempted to clear, but the effort was deflected off the chest of junior Becca Marzinke (Quakertown, PA / Upper Bucks Christian), who scored off the redirect to give Cairn a 1-0 lead. The Highlanders took that 1-0 lead into intermission. The Highlanders increased the pressure in the second half, when junior Teresa Lee (Jackson, NJ / Calvary Academy) appeared to score in the 59th minute, which would have given the Highlanders a 2-0 advantage, but Cairn was ruled offside to keep hope alive for the Ravens. Just two minutes later, the Highlanders appeared to find the back of the net off of a corner kick, but the goal was waved off again due to contact with the goalkeeper. Cairn did not take its foot off the gas, peppering the Rosemont back line with multiple scoring opportunities down the stretch, and kept the Raven offense away from sophomore goalkeeper Isabelle Lazor (Midland Park, NJ / Eastern Christian) en-route to the 1-0 shutout.

Cairn out shot Rosemont 15-5 in the contest and generated five corner kick opportunities in the bout. Lazor corralled three saves in her fourth shutout of the season.

With the win, the Highlanders advance to the CSAC semifinals for the fourth consecutive season, where they will match up with No. 1 seed Cedar Crest College in a rematch of last year's semifinal matchup in Allentown on Wednesday, November 2 at 6 p.m.
