Later on, a kill and service ace from junior Josiah Buss put the Highlanders in the lead; and when middle Jeff Bishop put down a kill using his patented slide, Cairn had achieved a first set victory, 25-22. The second set was equally close but the Highlanders used a four point run at the very end of the set to grab another win, 25-19. After a Ryan Garven kill opened the third set, the Highlanders cruised to an early 14-6 lead. The Flames fought back and brought the game to within three points after four Cairn errors. The Flames and Hannibal-LaGrange played an intense second match, which ended up in favor of Liberty as the Flames won in five sets, 18-16 in the fifth set.

In the first set against the Trojans of Hannibal-LaGrange University neither team was able to gain any ground and the teams battled to an even score of 18-18 throughout the set. Cairn scored the next three points on two kills and a block, and was eventually able to take the first set from the Trojans, 25-23. The second set was a back and forth affair that saw the Highlanders poised to win at 24-21. Powerful serving from the Trojans led to the Highlanders demise and Cairn was unable to regain the momentum, falling 27-25 in the second set. The Highlanders came out with a vengeance in the third set, jumping to an 8-3 lead in the early goings. Hannibal-LaGrange countered the Highlanders hot start and brought the score closer, but Cairn once again stood with game point at 24-21. Two straight kils from the Trojans had to give Cairn flashbacks to the previous set, but the ever so steady Garven crushed a game-winning kill to put the Highlanders up two sets to one. After winning the third set, Cairn had all of the momentum and cruised in the fourth set. When Jeff Bishop and Jon Wilson paired up for one final block, the win was official and Cairn had defeated Hannibal-LaGrange 25-18; giving Coach Ben Fuller his first coaching victory over his former teammate and former Cairn star Justin Brubaker.
