Box Score

The Highlanders travelled to New York City Tuesday night to compete in an out-of-conference matchup with the Hawks of Hunter College.  Cairn dropped the first four points to Hunter and was down, but three straight service aces from setter Jon Wilson allowed the Highlanders to grab the lead, momentum, and a win in the first set, 25-20.  Hunter took the next set fairly easily by a score of 25-17, setting the stage for the evenly matched contest.  Cairn continued their habit of granting early leads to the opposition and trailed 8-3 early in the third set.  The Highlanders proved their resiliency time and time again in this matchup as they rallied on a run of their own, and after junior Ryan Garven's kill, Cairn found themselves in the lead 20-16.  Cairn had an opportunity to win the set as they led, 24-23, but three consecutive kills from Hunter's Nino Hot eventually led to Cairn's loss, 27-25 in the third set.  In the fourth, and what would be the final set, Cairn and Hunter continued to trade points all the way to a score of 24-23, as a Josiah Buss kill brought the Highlanders as close as they would come.  A Cairn service error ended the affair as Cairn fell to the Hawks of Hunter College, 25-23.

Despite the loss, Cairn showed they are a talented team and will continue to round into form as the season progresses.

Cairn's statistical leaders on the night were:

Josiah Buss (12 kills, team-high 10 digs)
Ryan Garven (Team-high 15 kills, 6 digs)
Jon Wilson (34 assists, 8 digs, 6 service aces)

Cairn will travel to Ohio this weekend for the CVC Crossover and play three matches against, Dominican University, College of Mount St. Joseph, and the Milwaukee School of Engineering.
