Cairn Sweeps Competition in First Home Tri-Match

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Langhorne, PA- The Cairn Highlanders swept their competition 3-0 in two matches against New Jersey City University and Emerson College this Saturday afternoon.

In their first match against the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University the Highlanders struggled with the athleticism of the Gothic Knights, but were eventually able to defeat NJCU in three straight sets; 25-19, 32-30, 25-20.  The Highlanders jumped out to a big lead of 14-7 in the first set but NJCU fought all the way back to a score of 21-19 before Cairn pulled out the victory.  In an exciting second set where the teams battled far past the regulation score of 25, Cairn eventually pulled out a win after a Ryan Garven kill gave them the victory.  Cairn kept control of the match and won the third set 25-20 to defeat the Gothic Knights and achieve their first win of the season.  Outside hitters Garven and Josiah Buss led the Highlanders with 15 and 13 kills respectively.  Buss also illustrated his prowess as a former libero as he led the Highlanders with 14 digs.  Setter Jon Wilson had 30 assists and middle hitter Randall Colson secured 4 kills and an impressive 8 blocks.  

In the second match of the afternoon Emerson College handily defeated NJCU, 3-0, setting up what would be an intriguing third match with the Highlanders.



The prime time match up of the afternoon was in the third game when Cairn took on the 3-2 Lions of Emerson College.  With Michael Emond serving; Josiah Buss and Jeff Bishop set the tone for the Highlanders, alternating kills and blocks to stake the Highlanders to a commanding 7-0 lead right off the bat in the first set.  The Highlanders would go on to win the first set fairly easily by a score of 25-16.  The teams traded points in the second set until a series of kills by the Highlanders outside hitters, compounded by three straight errors from the Lions allowed to Highlanders to grab a victory, 25-21.  Cairn was also able to win the third set 25-21, thanks to two powerful kills from middle hitter Randall Colson to close the game.  

Garven and Buss ran the show from the outside with 14 and 11 kills, while middle hitters Colson and Bishop combined for 13 kills and 4 blocks.  Senior Jon Wilson also proved his experience, as the setter notched 33 assists for the contest.  

After an impressive weekend match, the Highlanders hope to keep up the momentum when they travel to Hunter College in NYC Tuesday night.
