Box Score
Lancaster, PA – In the NCCAA East Region championship, the men's soccer team fell in the worst circumstances possible, penalty kicks, following a scoreless 0-0 game.
Box Score
Until someone comes up with a better way to determine a winner, penalty kicks remain the chosen format to ending a game that remains at a stalemate after 110 minutes, and for the third time in the last four years, the Cairn University men's soccer team met Lancaster Bible in the East Region final. And just like the previous two meetings, the game was decided with penalty kicks.
The Highlanders outshot the Chargers 15-11 over the 110 minutes, including a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal, but could not make the most of their opportunities. In regulation, Cairn had double the shots of their opponents, 12-6, with sophomore Craig Kikendall leading all players with four shots, all of which were on target.
The closest either team came to breaking the deadlock was when Cairn's Jeremy McAlack's header had Lancaster's goalkeeper Stefan Smith beat, only for a Charger defender to clear the ball off the line.
Dave Shaffer made four saves in goal for Cairn, while LBC's Smith made eight.
In the shootout, Lancaster made the most of a missed and saved penalty from the Highlanders to claim a 4-2 shootout win and East Region title.
Cairn is now 8-9-1 on the season, while Lancaster Bible moves to 5-9-3.
The Highlanders have two regular season games remaining in the form of Cabrini College and Neumann University, both Colonial States Athletic Conference opponents. Cairn will need wins in both games to secure a playoff spot in the CSAC postseason.
