La Plume, PA - All of the scoring came in the opening 17 minutes of Saturday's men's soccer contest between Cairn University and Keystone College.
For the second game in a row, Cairn's men's soccer team conceeded a goal in the 7th minute of the contest. This time around, the goal came off of a rebound following a Keystone corner-kick.
However, unlike in the previous outing, the Highlanders were able to muster a response in the form of a goal. Two minutes later, Cairn were awarded a penalty kick after a Keystone handball in the box. Senior
Cody Mosely converted from the spot to tally his team-leading sixth goal of the season and knot the score at 1-1.
That score would remain for only seven minutes, though, as the Giants were awarded a penalty-kick of their own. After a controversial no-call for a potential impedement against Cairn's goalkeeper, the Highlanders were called for a foul in the box, giving Keystone a chance to regain the lead. Julio Peruz made the most of the opportunity, putting the host back on top, 2-1.
The score would remain that way for the remainder of the first half.
Coming out of the break, the Highlanders took control of the following 45 minutes dominating possession, territory, and holding a 10-5 advantage in shots in the second stanza. The only stat the Highlanders did not take control in was on the scoreboard.
The Highlanders had two quality chances to even the score or potentially take the lead, but were unable to convert either chance. Following a nice passing move in the 70th minute, senior defender
Jeremy McAlack was played in on goal one-on-one with Keystone's goalkeeper. McAlack's shot, however, went wide of the right post. With time running down and less than two minutes left in the game, sophomore
Craig Kikendall unleashed a rocket of a shot from 25 yards that looked destined for the net, before Keystone's goalkeeper, Danny O'Rourke was able to tip the shot just over the crossbar.
The Highlanders outshot the Giants 17-11.
The defeat drops the Highlanders to 7-8 on the season, 2-5 in the CSAC.
Cairn has two days off before they host nationally ranked Rutgers-Camden on Tuesday at 4pm. The Scarlett Raptors are currently ranked 8th in the NSCAA poll.
