Winchester, Va - Cairn's and Shenandoah University's men's soccer teams played out a 1-1 draw on Wednesday.
After 110 minutes, nothing could separate the two teams although the Highlanders will be kicking themselves for several clear cut opportunities they failed to make the most of.
Freshman
Caleb Moore recorded his 2nd career goal in the 12th minute of the game when he took a feed from
Seth Mangum and one-timed his shot into the upper left corner of the goal, giving Cairn an early 1-0 lead. Both teams would have their shots, but there were few other scoring chances in the opening stanza after the initial goal.
After the restart, the Hornets got exactly what they needed early on. In the 51st minute, Shenandoah was awarded a penalty kick and Alex Clouse made no mistake at the spot to tie the game up at 1-1.
With the score still tied 1-1 after 90 minutes, overtime was the order of the day. As the early minutes ticked away in the extra sessions, Cairn started taking control of the match in search of the game-winner. The Highlanders thought they had found the winner when
Ahron Park beat the Hornet's goalie to a ball in the box, heading over the on-rushing keeper, but a Shenandoah defender cleared the ball off the line at the very last second. The Highlanders pressure and dominance continued into the second overtime stanza with the Hornets struggling to get out of their own half. At one point, after a nifty backheel pass from
Cody Mosely, senior midfielder
Joran Hays found himself in space within the box and no one but the goalie between him and the game-winning goal, but Hays' shot missed just wide.
Shenandoah held a 21-17 advantage in shots, but Cairn had more shots on goal, 11-9. Cairn outshot Shenandoah 5-1 in the 2nd overtime period.
Cairn moves to 2-4-2 on the season and prepares to host conference foe Keystone College on Saturday in their second conference game of the season. Keystone snuck a 2-1 victory last season in Scranton, Pa.
