Stevenson Breaks Slump Against PBU

Box Score

Langhorne, PA - It's been at least 4 years since the last time PBU has lost to Stevenson and all streaks must come to an end eventually.

It was a close match throughout but Stevenson University seemed to have that little extra whenever they needed it to come away from Langhorne with a 3-0 victory.

The home side raced out to an 8-3 lead only to see Stevenson fight back to tie the score at 10-10. At that point, the Mustangs created a 3 point cushion and rode it all the way to a first set 25-22 victory.

The second was another tightly contested set with both sides remaining within 4 points at all times, with the exception of an 18-13 lead for the Crimson Eagles as they looked bound to even the game at 1-1. But several errors later and Stevenson had used a 1-6 run to even the score at 19. That run sparked the momentum they would need to close out the set, 25-22, and take a 2-0 lead.

The third set did not start the way PBU's 1st-year coach Ben Fuller would have wanted with the visiting Mustangs jumping out to a 8-2 lead. The Crimson Eagles would fight back to within 4 points on two separate occasions, 13-9 and 23-19, but in the end, Stevenson closed out a 25-19 final set win to take the overall match 3-0.

The crucial Continental Volleyball Conference win sees Mustangs take sole possession of 3rd place and drops the Crimson Eagles to 4th place in the East Division.

The defeat drops PBU to 5-12 overall and 1-4 in conference play. Stevenson improves to 8-8 overall, 2-2 in CVC play.

PBU's Ethan Mawhinney (Langhorne, PA / Neshaminy) had an outstanding game in front of his family and look-alike brother, leading all players with 11 kills on 21 attacks. Mawhinney finished with a solid .381 attacking percentage. Defensively, he contributed 4 block assists and 1 dig. Jon Wilson (Allentown, PA / Parkland) was credited with 30 assists. Josiah Buss (Rochester, NY / Hilton) had a team-high 13 digs.

On a positive note, the Crimson Eagles have improved greatly in eliminating their service errors, committing only 4 tonight. Their attack errors seem to be what did them in tonight, with 26. Whatever it was, Coach Fuller is sure to fix it.

For Stevenson, John Crinion led the way with 10 kills, while Kyle Wisner contributed 9. Adam Thatcher had a game-high 15 digs.

This weekend, PBU will play host to two familiar foes in Eastern Mennonite and Ramapo College. The first match takes off at 11:00am this Saturday.
