OWINGS MILLS, MD - It might have taken a little longer than initially anticipated, but the eighth ranked men's volleyball squad eventually pulled out a 3-1 win against host Stevenson University Friday evening despite going the distance in three of four sets.
The Mustangs - who are off to one of their best starts in program history thanks to an 18-5 overall record - fought tooth and nail the entire way and even managed to snag a third set win during Friday's scuffle. PBU ultimately edged out their counterpart, however, 26-24, 27-25, 25-27, 25-19.
After sweeping Stevenson with relative ease almost a month ago, the Crimson Eagles found out early that things wouldn't be the same during the current go-around.
After watching PBU take a 16-11 edge during the opening frame, Stevenson pieced together a 10-5 spurt to even things at 21 each. However, back-to-back kills down the stretch from the Crimson Eagles helped the visitors collect the opening game victory.
During the second stanza, the Mustangs grabbed control early, pushing out to a 16-11 lead midway through. But manufacturing a mini-rally of their own, PBU rattled off 10 of the next 15 points to notch things at 21. Noah Prickett took over down the stretch, smashing consecutive spikes to help PBU generate a 26-24 win.
With 15 ties and/or lead changes present during the third rally, play went back and forth with the score eventually deadlocked at 25-apiece late in the game. Stevenson snagged their lone win of the night following a kill and a costly attack error from the Crimson Eagles, winning 27-25.
Leading 2-1, the visitors decided to put the contest away early in the fourth stanza. PBU never trailed during the frame and at one point led 22-14 before polishing off the Mustangs, 25-19.
Despite only a mediocre hitting percentage throughout the evening (.149), the Crimson Eagles battered Stevenson with nine service aces on the night. The visitors received 38 combined kills from the tandem of Justin Brubaker and Noah Prickett with Brubaker posting a game high 14 digs as well.
The volleyball squad will continue action on Saturday, beginning with a 10:00 am meeting with Hunter College in Owings Mills.
