LANGHORNE, PA - As the men's soccer team experienced Saturday, when conference play picks up, so do levels of intensity.
Playing host in just their second league match of the season, the Crimson Eagles were outgunned during a 2-0 skirmish that saw Marywood University walk away with their first CSAC triumph in hand. But it wasn't an easy victory for the visitors.
PBU kept things close the majority of the match thanks to a backline that stiffened at nearly all the right moments. The Crimson Eagles withstood 31 shots on the day from the Pacers, cracking just twice during a contest that could have potentially slipped away early on if it weren't for the host group's unyielding mindset.
Marywood pestered PBU's net 19 times in the opening frame alone and yet somehow only found the back of the cage just once. Steve Bergmann finally put the green and yellow on the board with just over a minute remaining in the opening period, collecting a rocket off an indirect free kick to put home his second score of the season.
After managing just two blasts at the net throughout the first half, the Crimson Eagles managed slightly more pressure during the back end of play while searching for the evener, finishing the stanza with five shots on target.
However, a comeback wasn't in the cards for the host squad as Marywood all-but clinched things during the 81st minute when Bergmann found a hole in PBU's formation for the second time on the afternoon. The sophomore forward knocked in a header off a cross from teammate Christian Lawlor to give the Pacers a 2-0 edge.
Crimson Eagle rookie keeper Dave Shaffer managed a career high count of 16 saves throughout 90 minutes in the net. The game proved to be extremely physical, with 30 fouls distributed between the two squads.
PBU falls to 2-6 on the year while Marywood moves to 6-3.
The soccer team will look to bounce back on Wednesday during a road tilt with Rosemont College at 3:30 pm.
