DOYLESTOWN, PA - The Crimson Eagle women's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to host Delaware Valley College in the season opener for both teams.
The game also marked the head coaching debut of Dewey Landon for PBU.
"We have a lot of new players to integrate after losing a number of girls through graduation and transfers," said Landon, who brings many years of experience at the high school and club level.
Despite being outshot 28-1 in the 1st half, the Crimson Eagles trailed only 2-0 thanks to the strong play of senior goalkeeper Kristen Lyszczasz, who finished the day with 23 saves.
After failing behind 3-0 early in the 2nd half, the Crimson Eagles had a golden opportunity to score as freshman Kathleen Meacham played a through ball to freshman Katherine Zell. After receiving the pass, Zell appeared to be fouled in the box, but play resumed without penalty and Delaware Valley would score once more a few minutes later for the game's final tally.
"Kathleen Meacham had a good game," said Landon. "She was very active fighting for the ball for 90 minutes."
The extremely hot playing conditions were not ideal and a number of players succumbed to the heat as the day wore on. As a result of some injuries and sickness caused by the heat, every Crimson Eagle saw significant minutes which, according to Landon, will benefit the team as the season goes on.
"Everybody got in the game, and we'll most definitely get better as the season goes on," said Landon.
The team returns to action on Saturday, September 4 at SUNY Cobleskill at 1:00 p.m. in Cobleskill, NY.
