WSOC: Highlanders Shut Out Patriots in 5-0 Win to Make Playoffs

LANGHORNE, PA— Cairn hosted the Patriots of Valley Forge, coming away with a 5-0 after senior celebrations to secure a playoff ticket. 

Prior to the start of the match, Cairn took a minute to recognize the seniors of the women's soccer team and the hard work and dedication they had to the program over the past several years. The first senior to be recognized was goalkeeper Elizabeth Cobb (Cortland, NY / Cortland Christian). Elizabeth has been playing soccer at Cairn for two seasons with her first season being in 2024. Elizabeth has had a save percentage of .682 in the 16 games she has played in net for Cairn. The next senior to be recognized is defender Victoria Vega (Branchburg, NJ / Timothy Christian). Victoria has played soccer at Cairn for four seasons. Victoria has scored 9 points in the 48 games she has appeared in. The last senior to be recognized is Adaira Hufford. Adaira has managed the team for two seasons. She has been essential in providing support and assistance with any of the coaches' or players' needs. 

 The game started out with Cairn (2-10-2, 1-5-1 United East) developing momentum with the first 3 shots on goal with Valley Forge's (4-11, 1-7 United East) defense looked stolid as they kept all three shots out. Cairn found a breakthrough opportunity in the 8th minute where sophomore forward Juliana Condurso (Brick, NJ / Calvary Academy) found the back of the net with the first goal of the match, with the assists coming from sophomore forward Josey Smith (Levittown, PA / Pennsbury) and sophomore defender Abby Mellinger (Telford, PA / Dock Mennonite). Cairn managed to hang on to the momentum before finding their second goal in the 27th minute through sophomore defender Lexi Cramer (Greenwood, DE / Greenwood Mennonite). Junior midfielder Gianna Manning (Newport News, VA / Virginia Commonwealth University) didn't take long to make it 3-0 with a goal in the 28th minute. 

 In the second half, Cairn built their momentum quickly., as Josey Smith made the game 4-0 in the 56th minute by finding the net off an assist by junior midfielder Paige Noble (Egg Harbor Township, NJ / Atlantic Christian School). It didn't take long for the score to become 5-0 as Victoria Vega converted a penalty from the spot. Cairn held on to the lead and managed to keep the Patriots without a shot in the entire game. 

 The Cairn University Highlanders secured a play off ticket with a record of 1-5-1, snagging the final seed to make the post season. 

 Condurso, Manning, and Smith all found their second goals of the season. Cramer netted her first collegiate goal and Vega scored her first goal of the season. 

 The Highlanders will travel on Wednesday to face off against Wilson College in the opening round of the United East Championship.
