Historic Run Falls Short

Box Score

LANGHORNE, PA -
Following the program's most impressive run ever in championship play, the Crimson Eagles' title bid came up just short against a somewhat improbable opponent Sunday afternoon.

Nazareth College, arguably the hottest team in volleyball, brushed off PBU's best jab during the NECVA Championship bout, handling the Crimson Eagles in straight sets to secure their first ever tournament title.

But to say the Golden Flyers' march to the crown was improbable is probably an understatement.

Nazareth came into championship play ranked 15th overall, knocking off the second ranked team (Baruch College), seventh ranked squad (Ramapo College), and the sixth ranked group (MIT) before stunning the fourth seeded Crimson Eagles on Sunday.

PBU struggled to cool off Nazareth's high octane offense as the Golden Flyers posted a .309 hitting percentage for the match, a number that marks the Crimson Eagles sixth shakiest defensive performance of the season.

The red and white proved to be somewhat proficient on the offensive end as well (.231 hitting clip) but the group struggled at times to slip the ball past Nazareth's towering defensive front that racked up 19 block assists for the match.

Twelve service errors and just four service aces also proved to be hurdles the Crimson Eagles were unable to overcome.

The Golden Flyers ultimately prevailed by scores of 30-22, 30-28, 30-28.

Justin Brubaker provided a game high mark of 20 kills in the loss while Leo Dueck posted 16 spikes and seven digs. Josh Tuttle added seven kills and two aces and Drew Dillon put up 46 assists.

Brubaker and Dillon were named to the First Team All-Tournament squad for their efforts while Leop Dueck was selected to the Second Team.

Despite Sunday's loss, the Crimson Eagles conclude the year having advanced further than any team in program history. They end the season with a final record of 23-11.
