NEW YORK, NY – Just another ho-hum day in the life of a Crimson Eagle volleyball player.
Perhaps facing one of the more difficult schedules across D3, PBU geared up to face another pair of top fifteen nationally ranked teams on Saturday, signaling the sixth and seventh times they’ve skirmished with a top ranked foe this year through 18 games.
Following Saturdays 2-1 effort overall and 1-1 mark against their ranked counterparts, the Crimson Eagles currently sit 3-4 against their nationally recognized brethren for the season.
The eighth-ranked volleyball team initiated the weekend’s competition against fourth-ranked Baruch College, but things didn’t go quite as hoped against the feisty Bearcats. Baruch limited PBU into their worst hitting mark of the season as the Crimson Eagles managed to land just .009 percent of their attacks. Justin Brubaker’s match high of 17 kills wasn’t enough as the Bearcats rolled in their 20th win of the year by scores of 30-28, 30-24, 30-22.
Facing 14th ranked Medaille College in round two, PBU got back on track by blasting 65 kills for the afternoon, paced by Brubaker’s mark of 34. It signals the second time this year and fourth time in his career that Brubaker has surpassed the 30-kill barrier. Leo Dueck added 11 kills and 13 digs during the 30-21, 30-17, 20-30, 31-29 win, despite 15.5 total team blocks from the Mavericks.
The Crimson Eagles managed a 3-0 sweep over Newbury College in their final contest of the afternoon, but not before the Nighthawks gave them everything they could handle. PBU overcame Newbury by scores of 30-24, 30-25, 37-35 as the Crimson Eagles nearly hit .300 collectively for the contest to escape with their 14th victory of the year. Brubaker once again paced the red and white by landing 22 kills and 10 digs, and Noah Prickett added seven kills and a match high count of 13 digs.
The Crimson Eagles improve t o14-4 on the season following Saturday’s events and will return to the court on Tuesday during a huge date with divisional rival Eastern Mennonite University. PBU’s match in the Mason Activity Center against the Royals is slated to begin at 7:00 pm.
