LANGHORNE, PA - With their last four encounters being determined by a single score, why would anyone expect Saturday's clash between PBU and Lancaster Bible College to be any different?
Not surprisingly, the two rivals' most recent skirmish didn't disappoint. An early goal was all the host group needed as the Crimson Eagles slipped past the Chargers by a 1-0 count, signaling the fifth straight outing the two teams have been separated by a solo goal.
Freshman Gary Bruce netted what ended up being the game winner just eight minutes into the contest, knocking home a penalty kick into the left upper-90 corner to give PBU the early edge. Bruce - who was fouled just inside the 18 - logged his fourth goal over the squad's last two games with the PK.
During a physical affair that saw 26 fouls called between the two teams with three yellow cards handed out, the visitors responded to the early adversity by managing constant pressure on PBU's back line. Lancaster rifled 14 shots towards PBU's cage during the second frame alone, ending the game with a 19-6 overall edge in rips on goal.
However, despite LBC's unyielding offensive attack, the Crimson Eagles proved to be an unbreakable force. Freshman Keeper Dave Shaffer was a rock in the net, turning away 13 saves for the game including two monster stops down the stretch. The fourth shutout of his career, Shaffer and company continued their recent hot streak having played 215 consecutive minutes without allowing a goal.
In addition to their advantage in shots on target, Lancaster wracked up an 11-0 edge in corners taken but nonetheless came up empty in the goal department. It marks just the second time all year the Chargers have been blanked on the offensive end of the field.
The Crimson Eagles move to 4-7-1 following the win while Lancaster falls to 8-7.
The men's soccer team will return to the field on Tuesday when the group hits the road to play Gwynedd-Mercy College at 7:00 pm.
