Rochester, NY - Looking to capture their second consecutive NECVA Western Division Title Saturday afternoon, the Crimson Eagles instead had to settle for third place in the six team tourney.
After blowing past D'Youville College late Friday night to advance to the Semi-Finals, PBU needed to pull off an upset victory over fifth ranked Nazareth College, a group that had overcome the Crimson Eagles in both of their meetings earlier in the year.
It wasn't to be.
Nazareth proved to once again be an unclimbable mountain Saturday as the Golden Flyers breezed to their third straight triumph over PBU this year. Nazareth hit at a .450 clip for the match, dishing PBU their worst defensive perfomance of the season. Game scores were 30-27, 30-25, 30-26.
Justin Brubaker finished as the only player in double digit kills or digs, finishing with 23 and 15, respectively. Ben Fuller chipped in with eight kills and six digs, and Drew Dillon posted 44 assists and six defensive stops.
Facing longtime rival Eastern Mennonite University in the consolation match, PBU pulled off a 3-0 sweep over the Royals, giving the Crimson Eagles their second victory in three tries against EMU on the year. Game scores were 30-19, 30-19, 30-11.
Brubaker once again compilied a game high mark of 17 kills to go with 10 digs and five aces. Leo Dueck added 10 digs and seven kills.
The Crimson Eagles will await seeding to come out for the upcoming NECVA Tournament to take place April 3-5. The official tournament bracket will be released on www.necva.org no later than Monday, March 30 at 9:00 am.
