SCRANTON, PA - It's been four years and eight meetings since the women's soccer team has been able to overcome Baptist Bible College.
PBU entered Saturday's contest with the Defenders looking to erase that piece of history, needing a win to maintain an outside shot at making the CSAC playoffs.
Fourth-year vet Alexa Hays did her best to get the ball rolling in the right direction, wasting little time to give the Crimson Eagles the upper hand. Hays - PBU's leading scorer on the year - collected and finished a cross from sophomore Kate Henley less than seven minutes in to give the visitors an early 1-0 edge.
But any sense of security the group might have enjoyed was quickly erased. Baptist answered less than a minute later, evening the score at 1-apiece on a rip outside the 18 by Defender forward Hannah Andrist.
Following the quick start, play would slow down somewhat throughout the remainder of the stanza and would see-saw back and forth between the two longtime rivals.
Things would take a turn for the worse early in the second period when the Defenders would notch what ended up being the game-winning score 10 minutes into the back end. Sophomore Sandy Richie would calmly collect and finish a through-ball from classmate Carly Harper, who had taken advantage of miscommunication in the PBU defense, to give the host squad a one goal edge.
Despite several opportunities down the stretch, the Crimson Eagles were blanked the rest of the way in what marks Baptist Bible's eighth straight victory over PBU.
The Crimson Eagles fall to 3-12-1 on the year with the loss while Baptist Bible College improves to 10-8.
The soccer team will turn their attention to Lancaster Bible College in NCCAA East Regional play next Tuesday when the group hosts the Chargers in the opening round of the Tourney. Game time is 1:00 pm.
