LANCASTER, PA – If the Crimson Eagles were somewhat intimidated entering Thursday's contest with Lancaster Bible College, it was probably for good reason.
The Chargers, ranked third overall in NCCAA II, had come out victorious in seven of their last 10 games and are currently ranked fifth nationally on the offensive end, producing almost three scores a game. As if a potent offense isn't enough to worry about, LBC's back line has reason to boast as well as the group is ranked fourth across the country, allowing just 1.24 goals per game.
Couple that with PBU's inability to capitalize offensively at times during this early season, and one might surmise that Thursday's match-up between the two longtime rivals might have been somewhat of a mismatch on paper, at least statistically.
But PBU wasn't interested in mathematical assumptions during the all-important East Region showdown.
Instead, the Crimson Eagles took down the host squad by a solo goal, giving PBU their first back-to-back wins of the year while simultaneously marking the team's seventh straight triumph over the Chargers.
Senior Amanda Kirkner's lone goal just 2:30 into the contest was all PBU needed as the visiting squad withstood 15 Lancaster shots – seven on target – to pull off their fourth win of the year. It marks Kirkner's second goal in as many days, giving the fourth-year forward her third score of the season.
Junior keeper Kristen Lyszczasz had perhaps her best performance so far this season, stuffing eight shots to help preserve the shutout victory, her third of the season.
PBU improves to 4-8 overall with the win, while Lancaster falls to 8-6.
On Saturday, the Crimson Eagles will play in their first of five straight CSAC contests by hosting Centenary College at 12:00 pm.
